The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was established in accordance with the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Act, 1974, on 26th January, 1975.
Since its inception, MMRDA is engaged in long term planning, promotion of new growth centers, implementation of strategic projects and financing infrastructure development. The Regional Plan provides for a strategic frame work of MMR's sustainable growth. The object behind establishing MMRDA was to make MMR a destination for economic activity by promoting infrastructure development and improving the quality of life.
The MMRDA prepares plans, formulates policies and programs, implements projects and helps in directing investments in the Region.
The broad responsibilities of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority includes:

Providing financial assistance for significant regional projects
Providing help to local authorities and their infrastructure projects

We are delighted to share that Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, has been honoured with yet another prestigious award for his outstanding leadership in steering some of India's most complex underground road tunnelling projects, reshaping the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
At the 16th RAHSTA Expo 2026 (Roads and Highways Sustainable Technologies & Advancement), held at the Jio World Convention Centre, Dr Mukherjee was conferred the Special Recognition Award for Exemplary Leadership in Advancing the Underground Tunnelling Network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The award was presented by Shri Ajay Tamta, Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Government of India
Dr. Mukherjee also delivered the keynote address at the event, highlighting how an integrated network of roads, highways, bridges and tunnels is transforming the MMR and strengthening its position as one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan regions
Earlier this year, the Tunnelling Association of India also recognised Dr Mukherjee for his Outstanding Contributions to National Infrastructure and Tunnelling Excellence at the 5th TAI Excellence Awards
Today, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is rapidly emerging as India's tunnelling capital, and Dr Mukherjee is among the key leaders driving this transformation
