See a rise, cast right at it, and you just missed the fish.

That ring isn't where the trout is. It drifts up to eat, then drops back — so the ring you see is downstream of where it's holding.

Cast above the rise and let the fly drift down into its window, right where it's looking.

Aim above the splash, not at it.

Fish rising and sipping up top → tie on a dry and match the hatch.

Surface dead quiet → go under with a nymph, because that's where trout do about 80% of their eating.

Biggest brook trout I've ever caught — under a sky out of Lord of the Rings.

A wildfire in the distance pushed smoke over the whole lake and blacked out the sun. Everything went orange.

Temp dropped 20 degrees, ash started falling like snow, and the bite died the instant the light disappeared.

Packed up with ash covering all our gear. Strange, beautiful, frustrating day.
