Coffee Bay Fishing Report
For miles and miles out to sea, and up and down the coast either side of Coffee Bay, we scoured for sardines or any predator activity, and were not rewarded by anything except a few lost looking gannets.
The water is crystal clear here, and...warm!
It's not meant to be 23 degrees here at this time of the year...but luckily, as of today, we have finally got a drop down to 21.
And this is ideal shad temperature!
If you want to catch shad, head this way. Steve at Wildview Cottages up on the hill above White Clay Beach hosted us yesterday and told us that the fishing has just turned on and become really fun.
Shad are the main target species but kob have readily been chowing shad baits too.
And two spearos staying with us here at Mtakatyi saw two monster GTs on a crayfish dive yesterday. They never had guns with them on this shallow dive so the Geets swam free. The main thing to note is that these big kingfish come right into the shallows this time of year. Especially when the surf gets up a bit.
They also swim into the estuaries, and hopefully today we don't bump into any big ones today, with our light tackle.
For, we are about to launch into the Mtakatyi Estuary for some serious exploring and fishing. Before we continue the search for sardines tomorrow, up north.
Staying here at Mtakatyi River Lodge puts you within striking range of Coffee Bay, Mdumbi, Mnicibi in the south and Lwandile and Hluhleka to the north.
Get in touch if you want to stay at either at Wildview or Mtakatyi.

The Sardine News Daily 20 May 2026 actually does have some sardine news in it, but it ain't that good. Luckily, we have been keeping logs of sardine sightings since 2021, and all is not lost, as far as where these slippery sardines might be right now.
You can be sure, though, that with Elton and Garry and their boats out on there right now, that if you follow The Sardine News...
