MGM was one of the first studios to use the technicolor camera in The Wizard of Oz in 1939, when just 12 years earlier, the first talking film came to screen.

He created a ruthless monopoly called “The Trust,” claiming he owned the patents to all movie technology, and declared war on independent filmmakers.

But the indie directors refused to back down. To escape Edison’s heavy-handed lawsuits and literal street thugs sent to smash unlicensed cameras, these “pirate” filmmakers fled as far away from New Jersey as possible.
