*THE GOD WHO SEES*

*Scripture Reading:* Genesis 16

> _Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” *Genesis 16:13*_

El Roi is used to describe God as the seeing One. Hagar, Abraham’s maid, described the Lord this way when she was in the wilderness. Hagar felt used and abused by her mistress, Sarah. She had been led into a relationship with Abraham that she didn’t ask for and now, she was suffering for obeying the command of her mistress.

Pregnant and alone in the desert, the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar as she lay by a spring of water and encouraged her. The angel told Hagar to return home to the house of Abraham. In addition, the angel of the Lord assured her of the child's future. Hagar was so grateful that the Lord had seen all that she had gone through and had not abandoned her.

There in the desert, Hagar recognised the Lord as the One who sees – El-Roi.

1. *The Lord sees what happens to us.* Many times, when we are mistreated, we wonder if the Lord sees what we are going through. Yes, He does! The Lord sees our pain and struggles. He does not turn a blind eye to the injustices around us.

2. *The Lord sees us wherever we are.* The Lord saw where Hagar was, alone and abandoned. He knows where we are. He can find us when no one knows our location.

3. *The Lord sees the future we do not see.* The Lord saw the future of the child that Hagar was carrying. Though the child had not been born, the Lord saw how his life would turn out. The Lord sees the promise of our future when all we see is doom and gloom. He sees His plans coming to pass in our lives.

What Hagar discovered about God is part of His eternal nature. The Lord did not start seeing only in Hagar’s situation. He had seen Hagar before and would continue to see her after that. Today, you can be sure that the Lord who saw Hagar, also sees you.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, you are the One who sees. You see where I am and where you are taking me. I trust you with my life. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*DON’T BACKBITE*

*Scripture Reading:* Psalm 15

> _He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbour Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; *Psalm 15:3*_

Psalm 15 is a contemplation about the kind of person who experiences God’s presence at all times. Six of the Ten Commandments that express God’s holy, moral law are directed to our actions toward others. In today’s verse, the scriptures instruct on three things we must not do if we want to enjoy God’s presence in all that we do.

* *Don’t backbite with your words.* To backbite is to slander or tell a false story about someone when the person is not present. Literally, it is taking a bite at a person behind his back. God does not take kindly to anyone who slanders another. In some parts of the Bible, backbiters are listed alongside murderers and immoral people as the vilest of sinners. Those who delight in spreading or listening to tales about others will never know the delight of dwelling in God’s presence.

* *Don’t do evil to a neighbour.* Jesus clearly taught that loving our neighbours is second only to loving God. It is impossible to love God and hate your neighbour. If we love our neighbours, we will not sin against them in any way. However, it is not sufficient to merely refrain from taking action against someone. This also includes not wishing any ill will toward any individual. Remember, God knows our hearts, so our consciences must also be clear toward our neighbours.

* *Don’t reproach your friend.* The person who desires to dwell in God’s presence will say nothing that is even questionable about others. He or she is careful not to suggest anything that will bring reproach on another person. Quite the opposite, they will look for ways to edify others and to esteem others better than themselves.

The way we treat others, affects the way God treats us. When we forgive others, He forgives us; when we are merciful to others, He is merciful to us.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, I yield my tongue to you. Use my words to bring life, healing and edification to others. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*GOD IS WATCHING*

*Scripture Reading:* Psalm 14

> _The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside; they have become corrupt together. None does good, not even one. *Psalm 14:2–3*_

God is not absent from His creation. He watches what goes on in our world. The picture that the verse paints is that of the Lord sitting on His throne and leaning over the earth to examine what people are doing.

What does God lean over to see? He’s looking for people who have the presence of mind to seek Him. Literally, the Lord is looking for those who are not foolish enough to think that they are here on earth ontheir owns and can live anyhow.

What does God see? The Lord, sadly, sees that the people of the earth have turned their attention from Him. Left on their own, human beings want to live their lives without God. Though we are aware of Him, we want to live our lives without bothering about God, His laws and expectations.

The scriptures show us that every individual, beginning with Adam and Eve, has turned away from God. All of us have rejected God and His righteous law, and all have turned to walk in a different direction. Isaiah prophesied that “all we like sheep have gone astray and the Lord has laid on Him, the iniquity of us all. Consequently, we all stand guilty before Him.

That is the reason why Christ came. God had to come to us because we were far away from Him. Through His death and resurrection, the Lord Jesus offered His life to us. He clothed us in His righteousness. As such when God looks at believers now, He sees us in Christ and not in ourselves. And in Christ, God sees us as righteous and accepted.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, have mercy on our world. Touch the hearts of all who have turned away from you. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*THE WORK OF WICKEDNESS*

*Scripture Reading:* Exodus 8

> _Now the magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man and beast._ *Exodus 8:18*

No spot was spared in this third plague. Unlike the earlier plagues where some areas were left untouched, this plague was very extensive across the land. Everywhere, there were stinging insects, harassing the people.

Pharaoh’s magicians sought to mimic God’s work as they had done earlier. This time, they used their secret arts, but to no avail: they failed. The passage says that after their failure, the lice covered both man and animal.

The sorcerers could not mimic the acts of God, nor could they deliver the people from the judgment of God.

There is a point when all powers concede to the power of the Most High God. This was the endpoint for the magicians of Egypt. They were so overwhelmed by the plague of the lice that they just could not go any further.

The Lord gave advance knowledge to Moses of how the conflict with Pharaoh would go. It was not going to be quick work. It would be a drawn-out conflict. The Lord indicated that He would escalate His acts until Pharaoh released the Hebrews from bondage. The escalation to the third plague was the place where Pharaoh’s magicians conceded but it was not the final place for Pharaoh.

God’s works are persistent. Sooner rather than later, those who rebel against the Lord and His purposes will come to the end of their game. They may resist the Lord for a while but in time, they will come to a screeching halt. As the Lord brought the mimicry of Pharaoh’s magicians to a halt, may He bring every evil that has risen against you to a halt.

If you are a child of God, trust Him through your struggles. The enemy may resist God’s purposes for a while, but the Lord will escalate His works till all His enemies bow at His feet.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, confound every worker of wickedness. Bring the works of darkness to a halt in our land. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*STRETCH OUT YOUR ROD*

*Scripture Reading:* Exodus 8

> _So the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’_ *Exodus 8:16*

After Pharaoh refused to honour his promise to Moses, the Lord gave Moses fresh instructions. This instruction would lead to the third plague in Egypt. The process for this plague was slightly different from the first two plagues.

In the earlier plagues, the Lord instructed Moses to go to Pharaoh with a message that had a demand, a warning, and an intention.

This time, the Lord spoke to Moses to act without any reference to Pharaoh. Probably, the second and third plagues were meant to go together. The second plague brought frogs from the waters of Egypt. This third plague would affect the ‘dust of the land’.

*• Dust of the land.* Dust is plentiful. The dust referred to in the passage is the loose topsoil on the land. It is part of the land that gets blown into the air when there is a sandstorm. In the Middle East, a sandstorm can hang so thickly in the air that people are not able to open their eyes. It was this sand that God was about to touch through the rod of Aaron.

*• That it may become.* Like the earlier plagues, this plague was transformational. This followed the pattern of miracles that the Lord had shown Moses on Mount Horeb. There, the rod of Moses and the hand of Moses were transformed back and forth. Similarly, this third plague would be transformational.

The Lord would take something as natural as dust and turn it against Pharaoh. It shows God’s control over His creation. The Lord can use what He has created in accordance with His pleasure.

The God we serve can take anything and use it for His purposes. He can cause His creation to either favour us or fight us. Pharaoh was just about to see the limits of his magicians’ powers.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, you are God over your creation. Cause your creation to work out your purposes in our world. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU*

*Scripture Reading:* Exodus 7

> _Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as the LORD commanded them, so they did. And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh. *Exodus 7:6–7*_

Moses and Aaron were very old men by today’s standards. They were both in their eighties – Moses, 80 and Aaron 83 – when God charged them to lead Israel from captivity. There are lessons to learn from how the Lord used these ‘old men’ to accomplish so much late in life.

* *We are useful to God at any age.* Throughout the scriptures, we observe that God uses people irrespective of their age. He called Samuel in his early teens and called Moses at eighty. God’s grace reaches both the young and the old.

Sometimes, people who retire from service consider that they are no longer useful. If we can learn anything from Moses, it is that retiring from one service can open the door to another service. Moses retired as a shepherd in his father-in-law’s business and entered into another service as the deliverer of Israel. God is not finished with us due to our age.

* *God can give us another opportunity.* Moses first attempted to deliver Israel from bondage when he was forty. That attempt failed. Now, forty years later and in his old age, God gave Moses a second chance.

Like Moses, you may have made a mess of an earlier opportunity. However, if we stay faithful to the Lord, He will give us another opportunity.

* *God’s grace is our strength.* Thoughneitherh Mosesnord Aaron were weaklings at that ripe age, they were also aware of the physical toll that their mission would take on them. They trusted God for grace to enable their bodies to carry the weight of their mission.

We can also trust God for strength as we grow in age. If He did it for Moses and Aaron, the Lord can do it for us.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, you hold my years in your hand. Let each year of my life be more productive than the previous one. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*WHEN GOD GETS INVOLVED*

*Scripture Reading:* Exodus 7

> _And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.” *Exodus 7:5*_

A significant part of what the Lord set out to do in the epic battle for Israel was to establish His Lordship over Egypt. God’s miraculous acts brought judgment on the Egyptians, the wonders also gave testimony to God, to His power and to His love for His people. The wonders, though terrible to behold, were also an invitation for people to believe.

The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord. God wanted to use Pharaoh’s hardened heart and His judgment to reveal Himself to the Egyptians – the larger population of the people of Egypt. How would God do that?

* *Break the spiritual powers controlling Egypt.* The contest here was not so much with Pharaoh himself as with the spiritual forces that ruled through him. The evil that had held sway over Egypt, manipulating the people and bringing Israel into servitude had to be broken. The miracles and plagues in Egypt were meant to dethrone those evil powers.

* *Claim Israel as God’s heritage.* God chose Israel for Himself through a covenant with Abraham. God’s children had to be delivered from the evil system that sought to pollute their faith and worship. He set out to redeem Israel as His prized possession and He did so strongly. Pharaoh had seized Abraham’s descendants and it was time to take them back from him.

* *Turn the Egyptians to God.* God sought to bring repentance and conviction to the hearts of the Egyptians. To the Egyptians, the acts of God were designed to settle the controversy over who was “The Lord”. This was a prime opportunity to turn away from their false gods to the One True Creator of the Universe.

God’s powerful works are not just a show off nor are they a malicious pursuit to visit vengeance on the wicked. His real intent is to bring both deliverance and redemption; deliverance for His people who are held captive and redemption for their captors. The battles we face are opportunities to manifest His glory and save people who are lost.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, let the nations of the world know that you are Lord; that the people may turn to you. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*PRAYING WITHOUT ANGER*

*Scripture Reading:* 1 Timothy 2

> _I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; *1 Timothy 2:8*_

Our attitudes and actions affect how God responds to our prayers. The Lord Jesus clearly taught that unforgiveness and bitterness are stumbling blocks to answered prayer. He also taught that praying with doubt in our hearts impacts the efficacy of our prayers. Broken human relationships affect our relationship with God.

- *Pray without wrath.* We must not allow our anger against people to become the basis for our prayer points. We cannot present the Lord with vengeful requests against others and expect to have such prayers answered. The wrath of man does not work out the righteousness of God.

- *Pray without disputing.* Another word for ‘doubting’ is ‘disputing’ - or holding different opinions. The passage is intended for those who have disputes with others that they seek to resolve through prayer. They pray to present a quarrel. We are admonished not to pray such prayers.

The Lord wants His church to pray in unity. He told us that when two of us agree in prayer on earth, He will respond in heaven. We forfeit this benefit when we permit hurts and differences to dictate what we pray to the Lord and how we pray to Him.

As much as is possible with us, we must endeavour to walk in unity with other Christians, even if they belong to different churches. Of course, when people depart from the core of the Christian faith, we must caution them, when we engage with them.

However, when it comes to prayer, we must not come before the Lord with wrath in our hearts or with a quarrelsome attitude.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, let the lifting up of my hands be as a sweet and holy fragrance before you. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_

*PRAYING WITH LIFTED HANDS*

*Scripture Reading:* 1 Timothy 2

> _I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; *1 Timothy 2:8*_

Praying with uplifted hands is an Old Testament practice that was continued under the New Testament. Paul’s instruction was directed to the men who led the congregation in prayer.

He wanted those who led the congregation to set an example of holiness. Since the holy example of the church leader was to be followed by the rest of the church, this command can be applied to the whole church.

God does not have a conduct for pastors that is different from that of the congregation. If the Lord wants those who lead in prayer to lift up holy hands, He also wants those who join in the prayer to lift up holy hands.

What does it mean, to lift up holy hands in prayer?

1. *Lord, my life is open before you.* When we lift up our hands in prayer, we are saying that we have nothing to hide in the presence of God. It describes a state of openness before the Lord and the readiness to receive whatever He has in store for us.

2. *Lord, wash me and make me clean.* When we lift up our hands in prayer, we are asking the Lord to wash us and make us acceptable in His presence. It is a request for cleansing from all unrighteousness so we can be free from fear and condemnation before Him.

3. *Lord, I surrender to you.* When we lift up our hands in prayer, we are showing that we are submitted to God and His will for our lives. In that posture, we are communicating to the Lord that all we are and have, belongs to Him and that we set aside our will and embrace His will.

When we talk to God and present our requests to Him, we must recognise His sovereignty in answering our prayers. We do not have all our prayers answered in the way we expect them to because God does what He sees fit according to the counsel of His will.

*Prayer:* _Heavenly Father, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before you. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_
