🏰 The Avengers of Ancient Lanka: King Dutugemunu’s Ten Great Giants (Dasa Maha Yodayo) 🇱🇰🐘

Did you know that long before modern superhero teams, Sri Lankan history had its own league of extraordinary warriors?

According to the Mahavamsa, King Kavantissa (Dutugemunu’s father) scoured the island to find men of superhuman strength to help his son unify the country. These men, known as the Dasa Maha Yodayo, possessed powers ranging from super-speed to iron-grip strength.

Here is the legendary list of the 10 Giants! 👇

1. Nandimitra (නන්දිමිත්‍ර) - The Breaker of Tusks 🐘💪

Origin: His uncle was a general named Mitta.

The Legend: As a toddler, his parents tied him to a heavy millstone to keep him from wandering off. Instead of staying put, he dragged the heavy stone around the house! In battle, he was known to have the physical strength of ten elephants.

2. Suranimala (සුරනිමල) - The Speedster ⚡🏃

Origin: From the village of Khandakavitthika.

The Legend: Originally considered lazy by his family, he proved everyone wrong by running from the south of Lanka to Anuradhapura and back (hundreds of miles) in a single day to fetch gifts! He was the fastest runner in history.

3. Mahasona (මහාසෝන) - The Palm Uprooter 🌴🖐️

Origin: From the village of Hundarivapi.

The Legend: By age seven, he was uprooting small palm trees. By age ten, he could tear fully grown coconut trees out of the ground with his bare hands and use them as weapons to smash enemy ramparts.

4. Gothaimbara (ගෝඨයිම්බර) - The Short Giant 🌳🧘‍♂️

Origin: From the village of Nitthulavitthika.

The Legend: Short in stature (dwarf-like) and mocked by his tall brothers, he proved his strength by single-handedly clearing an entire forest of tough Imbara trees, uprooting them to create a flat field.

5. Theraputthabhaya (ථේරපුත්තාභය) - The Club Wielder ⚔️🛡️

Origin: The son of a householder named Abhaya.

The Legend: He wielded a massive club made of wood that was 16 cubits long and 38 inches around! After the war, he was the only giant to lay down his weapon and become an Arahant monk.

6. Velusumana (වේළුසුමන) - The Master Horseman 🐎💨

Origin: From the Kutumbiyangana district.

The Legend: An expert equestrian. He tamed a wild Sindhu horse that no other man could mount. He could ride so fast and with such agility that he could circle an entire army without being caught.

7. Khanjadeva (ඛංජදේව) - The Iron Grip 🐃👊

Origin: From the village of Mahisadonika.

The Legend: He had a limp in his leg (Khanja = lame), but his upper body strength was terrifying. He hunted by chasing wild buffaloes, grabbing them by the leg, whirling them over his head, and dashing them against the ground.

8. Phussadeva (ඵුස්සදේව) - The Sniper 🏹🐚

Origin: From near the Sithulpawwa temple.

The Legend: The greatest archer of his time. He could shoot by sound alone (Sabdavedi)—hitting a target just by hearing it in the dark. His conch shell blow was so loud it sounded like a thundercrack, terrifying enemy troops.

9. Labhiya Vasabha (ලභියවසභ) - The Earth Mover 🏔️⛏️

Origin: From the Thuladhara mountain area.

The Legend: Known for his incredibly handsome/noble figure (Labhiya). He possessed the strength of many men and single-handedly built a massive tank (reservoir) by moving tons of earth in record time.

10. Bharana (භරණ) - The Hunter 🏹🐗

Origin: From the village of Kappakandara.

The Legend: As a young boy, he could chase hares and crush them under his feet. Later, he used this speed and power to hunt elk and wild boar with a single kick or fist strike.

📜 Ancient References: 📌 The Mahavamsa (Chapter 23): The primary source detailing the recruitment and specific feats of these warriors. 📌 The Rajavaliya: Chronicles their vow to King Kavantissa to remain neutral during the civil war between brothers Dutugemunu and Tissa. 📌 Thupavamsa: Records their contributions to the construction of the Ruwanwelisaya.

These legends remind us of the strength, unity, and dedication of our ancestors. Which giant is your favorite? Let us know in the comments! 👇

The King Who Healed a Cobra
-----------------------------------
Imagine ancient Sri Lanka, around the 4th century AD. The capital city of Anuradhapura is bustling. The ruler at the time was King Buddhadasa.
Now, history is full of kings who were great fighters or builders. But Buddhadasa was famous for something else entirely: he was an incredibly skilled surgeon. And more importantly, he had a massive heart. He didn't just treat wealthy nobles; he built hospitals for common people and, famously, even for animals. 🏥🐴🐘
One hot afternoon, the King was out riding on his elephant, perhaps returning from inspecting a reservoir. As they passed a rocky, overgrown area, something caught his eye.
It was a cobra. 🐍
Not just a garden snake, but a massive, terrifyingly venomous cobra. Usually, the King’s guards would have immediately killed it or chased it away. But King Buddhadasa signaled them to stop.
He noticed something was wrong. The snake wasn't coiled to strike; it was thrashing around on the ground in obvious agony. Its neck was horribly swollen, bulging out as if it had swallowed a rock. Its eyes were clouded with pain.
The King, forgetting his royal safety and thinking only as a doctor, climbed down from his elephant. 🐘🚶‍♂️
His guards were frantic. "Your Majesty, stay back! It will kill you!"
But Buddhadasa approached slowly. He realized what had happened. The snake, likely hunting for food, had swallowed a hardened anthill, and it had become hopelessly stuck in its throat. The poor creature was slowly choking to death. 😰
The King knew he was the only one who could help, but he also knew that one wrong move meant a lethal bite. He needed the snake to stop thrashing.
With incredible nerve, the King gently but firmly stepped on the cobra’s tail. The snake froze, sensing the dominance but also perhaps sensing that this human wasn't trying to hurt it.
Taking a small, sharp surgical knife from his belt, the King leaned over the deadly head. Sweat dripped down his forehead. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. 🗡️
With the precision of a master surgeon, he made a quick incision right over the swelling. He reached in and carefully pulled out the hard lump of earth that was blocking the snake's airway.
The snake let out an almost audible hiss of relief as air rushed back into its lungs. 💨
But the King wasn’t done. A good doctor does aftercare. He quickly cleaned the wound and applied a healing herbal paste to the cut to prevent infection. 🌿🩹
He stepped back and lifted his foot from the tail.
The guards held their breath, waiting for the snake to strike in retaliation. Instead, the massive cobra slowly lifted its head, looked directly at the King for a long moment, lowered its hood in a gesture of submission, and quietly slithered away into the bushes.
The story doesn't end there.
The legend says that a few days later, the King found something sitting on the doorstep of his palace. It was a magnificent, glowing jewel—a "Naga Manikya" (Cobra Gem) of immense value. 💎✨
It was the serpent's way of paying its medical bill.
It’s a story that has been told for centuries, reminding us that true compassion requires bravery, and that kindness is a universal language understood even by the most feared creatures on earth.

**Hi my friends! 👋😊**

Today we are going to talk about the **legend behind the Minneriya Lake** 🌊✨.

During the **Anuradhapura Kingdom**, there was a king named **King Mahasena** 👑. One day, after his meal, he noticed an **unfamiliar taste** in the curd 🥛. Curious, he asked the chef about it. The chef replied,

“Your Majesty, this curd is supplied from outside the castle, and I do not know the reason for this unusual taste.”

After realizing this, King Mahasena thought, *“I will go and check the reason for this myself.”* 🤔

One day, while the king was traveling near a village, he had another chance to taste the same kind of curd. Once again, he asked the villagers about it.

They replied,

“Your Majesty, we use milk from these cows to make curd. After we release them, they go into the jungle and later return to the farm.” 🐄🌳

Because of this, King Mahasena decided to investigate further. He ordered his men to **tie a bag of beans to the backs of the cows**. Then he told the farmers to make a small hole so that **one bean would drop and grow** along the way 🌱.

The villagers followed the king’s instructions. After the rainy season 🌧️, the king returned and personally followed the **bean plants** that had grown from the village into the jungle.

Finally, he discovered the place where the cows rested during the middle of the day. There, he also found the reason for the **unfamiliar taste of the milk**. The cows were feeding on **licorice plants** that grew abundantly in that area 🌿✨.

At the same time, King Mahasena noticed a **large natural water body** nearby and realized its great potential. Because of this discovery, he ordered the construction of **Lake Minneriya** 💧🏞️.

Due to this remarkable achievement, King Mahasena became famous as **“The God of Minneriya”** 🙏👑.

This is the legend.
Let’s meet again with another legendary story 📜✨.
**Have a nice day! 🌞😊**

*********************************************************************
The Era of Power Struggles Before the King Walagamba

**Thulatthana: Ruled only briefly after King Saddhatissa. He was quickly overthrown by his older brother, starting a cycle of family betrayal.

**Lanjatissa: Seized the throne by force. His reign was marked by tension and a departure from traditional royal conduct, alienating the people.

**Khallatanaga: His rule ended in assassination by his own commander, proving that loyalty within the palace had completely crumbled.

********************************************************************
Weaknesses & The Fall

**Fratricide: The habit of brothers killing brothers for power decimated the royal lineage and created a vacuum of legitimate leadership.

**Internal Division: Constant political infighting exhausted the military and distracted the kingdom from strengthening its borders.

**The Collapse: This disunity paved the way for the Five Dravidian invaders, who easily defeated the fractured Anuradhapura Kingdom.

*******************************************************************
Lessons Learned

**Internal Conflict is Fatal: A nation divided against itself cannot stand; internal chaos is often more dangerous than external enemies.

**Ambition vs. Duty: When leaders prioritize personal power over national stability, the entire country pays the price.

This wraps up our summary of the Anuradhapura Kingdom's political situation before the reign of King Walagamba the Great. In the next video, we will discuss how King Walagamba defeated the Five Dravidian invaders and united the kingdom after years of conflict.
