We love these little eReaders in our community and I asked them about the rumoured plans to lock devices so that you cannot install the excellent third party firmware "crosspoint".
Here's their response:
"Regarding your questions around firmware — thanks for bringing them up directly. We’ve also noticed some recent discussion and wanted to clarify our current position:
• At this stage, we do not have plans to lock the X3/X4 devices for overseas users, and there is currently no strategy in place to restrict firmware access on officially purchased overseas devices.
• As long as devices are purchased through official channels, users do not need to worry about this becoming part of the intended overseas experience.
• What has changed internally is mainly related to after-sales and support policy, rather than openness itself.
Recently, we’ve seen an increasing number of support cases where devices running modified or third-party firmware were later returned for troubleshooting, repairs, refunds, or support requests. In many situations it becomes difficult for our team to distinguish software-related behavior from original device performance.
Because of this, our direction is that issues caused after installing third-party firmware or unofficial modifications may not be covered under standard warranty and after-sales support moving forward.
This is intended to help us provide a more stable and reliable support experience — not to limit exploration or customization itself."
