[덴지네 가족 시리즈 완결 후기]

안녕하세요, 도퀴단입니다.


장장 6개월 넘게 연재해 온 체인소맨 시리즈가 드디어 막을 내렸습니다. <귀멸의 체인소>, <처자식 버리고 튄 덴지>, <체인소련>, <사랑과 전쟁> 편까지 모든 분량을 합치니 총 3시간에 육박하더군요. 저조차도 이렇게 긴 여정이 될 줄은 몰랐습니다. 이 모든 것은 오로지 시청자 여러분의 따뜻한 관심과 성원 덕분입니다. 진심으로 감사드립니다.


덴지네 가족 시리즈의 계속된 연재를 바라는 분들의 마음은 잘 알고 있습니다. 하지만 '뇌절'이라는 비판도 많았고(스스로도 인정하는 부분입니다), 무엇보다 체인소맨이라는 IP 자체가 완전히 사망 해버린 상태라 더 이상 진행할 동력을 찾기 어려웠습니다. 따라서 앞으로 제 채널에서 체인소맨을 다루는 일은 없을 것 같습니다.


사실 주술회전의 조회수가 훨씬 더 잘 나오는 상황이라, 체인소맨은 적당히 던져버리고 주술회전이나 제가 좋아하는 원피스에만 집중할까 고민하기도 했습니다. 하지만 그것은 시청자분들에 대한 예의가 아니라고 생각했습니다. 특히 원작 결말에서 느낀 허탈감을 제 작품을 통해 대리 만족하며 보시는 분들께, 저까지 똑같은 상처를 드리고 싶지 않았습니다. '한번 시작한 작품은 어떤 식으로든 마무리를 지어야 한다'는 것이 저의 개인적인 신조이기도 합니다.


돌아보면 제 결말 역시 급전개로 인해 조잡하고 부족한 점이 많았습니다. 서사상 굳이 필요 없었던 캐릭터들(효인, 키가, 파워, 이노스케 등)도 있었고, 전반적으로 내용이 너무 빠르게 넘어가는 경향이 있었습니다.


특히 레제와 나유타의 화해 장면은 원래 나유타가 능력을 각성해 레제를 구하며 마음을 여는 전개로 구상했었습니다. 그런데 마키마가 등장하면 더 재밌을 것 같아 나유타의 몸에 마키마를 수육시키는 전개를 넣다 보니 이야기가 걷잡을 수 없이 흘러가 버렸네요. 체인소맨 특유의 기괴한 분위기를 충분히 살리지 못한 점도 개인적인 아쉬움으로 남습니다.


애초에 시즌 3를 시작하며 체계적인 계획 없이 '도파민'적인 재미만 쫓았던 것이 가장 큰 패착이었습니다. "귀칼 애들이랑 엮어볼까?" 해서 이노스케를, "한국 전쟁 시나리오를 짜볼까?" 해서 효인을, "덴지의 사생아가 나오면 재밌겠다!" 싶어서 키가를 출연시켰습니다. 이런 즉흥적인 판단이 반복되다 보니 불필요한 캐릭터가 늘어났고, 결과적으로 전개는 빠른데 군더더기가 많은 결과물을 낳았습니다.


메인 빌런인 요루 역시 캐릭터성이 모호했습니다. 원작에서도 목표가 갑자기 흐지부지되는 등 목적성이 약했는데, 제 작품에서도 요루가 명확한 목표 없이 표류하다 보니 전개를 틀기 위해 '시이'를 갑작스럽게 등장시킬 수밖에 없었습니다. 만약 요루가 끝까지 최종 보스였다면 정말 수습이 안 되었을 겁니다.


"아사는 왜 안 나오냐"는 질문도 많았습니다. 제 시리즈에서 아사와 요루는 동일 인물입니다. 요루가 약해지면 아사의 인격이 드러나는 설정이죠. 이렇게 설정한 이유는 아사라는 캐릭터가 다루기 매우 까다롭기 때문입니다. 소심하면서도 내면은 복잡하고, 타인에게 휘둘리며 추진력과 목표마저 부재한 캐릭터라 극을 이끌어가기에 부적합하다고 판단했습니다. 그런 아사에게 마찬가지로 다루기 힘든 요루가 이중인격으로 얹혀 상시로 튀어나온다? 셰익스피어가 와도 몸서리를 칠 만큼 전개가 빡세질 것 같아 과감히 출연을 제한했습니다. 꼬인 이야기를 더 꼬이게 만들고 싶지 않았기 때문입니다.


"레제의 성격이 원작과 너무 다르다(캐붕이다)"라는 의견에 대해서는, 캐릭터성이 원작과 달라진 점을 인정합니다. 다만 이는 '덴지와 결혼하여 가족을 이룬 후 성격이 변했다'는 설정을 바탕으로 한 의도적인 변화였습니다.


원작의 레제는 냉혹한 암살자이자 신비로운 매력을 가진 캐릭터입니다. 하지만 그런 신비주의 캐릭터는 적당히 거리를 두고 지켜볼 때만 매력적일 뿐, 일상을 공유하는 '잡은 물고기'가 된 이후에도 그 성격을 유지하면 극의 재미가 반감될 수밖에 없습니다.


그래서 덴지와 함께 살며 부대끼는 과정에서, 레제의 성격이 덴지를 닮아 조금씩 변해가는 것으로 설정했습니다. 그래야만 상황에 대한 반응이 찰지고 시청자분들께 더 큰 재미를 드릴 수 있다고 판단했기 때문입니다.



그래도 마지막에 악마를 완전히 없애서 덴지와 레제를 평범한 인간으로 만든 선택은 잘한 일이라고 생각합니다. 아이들은 나이를 먹는데 부모만 그대로라면, 결국 자식이 부모보다 먼저 죽는 비극이 생길 테니까요. 가족의 행복을 위해서는 악마의 힘을 버리고 함께 늙어가는 편이 훨씬 깔끔한 마무리가 될 것 같았습니다.


혹자는 "설정이 원작과 맞지 않는다", "원작 알못이냐"라고 하실 수도 있습니다. 사실 저 원작 잘 모르는 거 맞습니다. 체인소맨을 제대로 접한게 레제편 이후 부터거든요. 하지만 원작에서도 악마나 무기인간에 대해 명확히 설명해주지 않은 부분들이 많았기에, 오히려 제 마음대로 상상을 펼칠 수 있었던 것 같기도 합니다.


그동안 온갖 고생을 다 한 레냐에게 이제는 행복하라는 말을 전하고 싶습니다.

[The Denji Family Series: Final Thoughts]

Hello, this is Dokidan.


The Chainsaw Man series that I’ve been working on for over six months has finally come to an end. Between Demon Slayer x Chainsaw, Denji Runs Away from His Wife and Kids, Chainsaw Soviet, and Love and War, the total runtime is nearly three hours... I never imagined it would grow this long. This was all possible thanks to your support and interest. Thank you so much.


I’m well aware that many of you wanted the Denji Family series to continue. However, there has been a lot of criticism about "dragging it out" (which I admit is true), and more than anything, I felt the Chainsaw Man IP had completely lost its momentum, making it hard to find the drive to keep going. Therefore, I don't think I will be covering Chainsaw Man on this channel anymore.


To be honest, since Jujutsu Kaisen gets much better views, I considered just throwing Chainsaw Man aside to focus on JJK or One Piece. But I felt that wouldn’t be respectful to my viewers. I didn't want to hurt the fans who found comfort in my work after being disappointed by the original manga's ending. It is also my personal creed that once I start a project, I must see it through to the end, no matter what.

Looking back, I think my ending was a bit messy and rushed. There were characters who weren't strictly necessary for the narrative (Hyoin, Fami, Power, Inosuke, etc.), and the pacing was overall a bit too fast.


Specifically, regarding the reconciliation between Reze and Nayuta: I originally planned for Nayuta to awaken her powers and save Reze, leading Reze to open her heart. But then I thought it would be more interesting if Makima appeared, so I had Makima possess Nayuta’s body... and things just spiraled out of control. Personally, I’m also disappointed that I couldn't fully capture the bizarre atmosphere and character designs unique to Chainsaw Man.


The biggest mistake was chasing "dopamine" and instant fun without a systematic plan when starting Season 3. I thought, "Should I crossover with Demon Slayer again?" and added Inosuke. Then I thought, "What if they go to Korea and I write a Korean War scenario?" so I added the Korean character, Hyoin. Then, "It would be fun if Denji had an illegitimate child!" so I added Fami. These impulsive decisions led to an excess of unnecessary characters and a plot that felt rushed yet cluttered.

The main villain, Yoru, also had a vague personality. Even in the original work, her goals felt weak and inconsistent, and in my story, she drifted without a clear objective. This forced me to suddenly introduce "Shii" to pivot the plot. If Yoru had remained the final boss, the story likely would have collapsed entirely.


Many of you asked why Asa didn't appear. In my series, Asa and Yoru are the same person—not even a split personality, but simply that Asa's persona emerges when Yoru is weakened. I chose this because Asa is an incredibly difficult character to write. She’s socially awkward yet internally complex, easily swayed by others, lacks initiative, and doesn't even have a clear goal. Having a protagonist with those traits—and then layering a difficult character like Yoru on top as a constant presence? Wow. Even Shakespeare would shudder at the thought of writing that! That's why Asa didn't make an appearance; it would have only tangled the plot further.


Regarding the comments that "Reze’s personality is out of character," I admit she differs from the original. However, this was an intentional change based on the setting that her personality shifted after marrying Denji and starting a family.

In the original, Reze is a cold assassin and a mysterious character. But that kind of "mystery" is only charming from a distance. Once she becomes a "caught fish"—part of a domestic daily life—maintaining that stoic persona makes the story boring. So, I adjusted her to be more like Denji as they lived together. I felt this made her reactions more lively and entertaining for the viewers.


Despite everything, I believe choosing to remove the devil powers entirely and making Denji and Reze ordinary humans was the right call. The children are aging, but if the parents stayed immortal, they would eventually suffer the tragedy of outliving their own children. For the family's true happiness, I felt it was cleaner for them to discard their powers and grow old together.


Some might say, "This doesn't fit the lore" or "You don't know the original work." And you're right—I'm not a lore expert. I didn't follow the original closely after the Reze arc. But since the original manga leaves many things about devils, fiends, and hybrids unexplained, it actually gave me more freedom to use my imagination.


I want to tell Lenya, who went through so much in this series, to be happy from now on.

오늘 <덴지 가족> 시리즈가 시즌 3로 완결된다는 소식에 많은 분이 아쉬워해 주셔서 저 또한 마음이 무겁고도 감사합니다. 사실 저조차도 아쉬움이 많이 남습니다.

솔직히 고백하자면, 시즌 3를 시작할 때 명확한 결말을 정해두지 않고 시작했습니다. 그 때문에 이야기가 본래 의도와 다르게 흘러가기도 했고, 불필요한 장면이나 등장인물이 늘어나기도 했습니다. 순간적인 도파민을 자극하는 전개에 치중하다 보니, 때로는 스스로 느끼기에도 개연성이 부족한 전개가 나오기도 했던 것 같습니다.

사실 불과 2시간 전까지만 해도 결말을 어떻게 지어야 할지 막막했습니다. 원작에서도 풀리지 않은 떡밥이 많다 보니, 제가 독단적으로 스토리를 끌고 가는 것에 대한 확신이 없었기 때문입니다. 1부 ‘귀멸의 체인소’는 레제 편의 라인을 따랐고, 2부 ‘체인소련’은 마키마라는 확실한 중심축이 있어 원작을 참고하거나 변주하는 것이 가능했습니다.

하지만 3부는 달랐습니다. 마치 원작 2부처럼 이야기의 핵심을 이끌 인물들의 목표가 불명확하다 보니 방향을 잡기가 어려웠습니다. 초반에는 나유타와 레제의 갈등을 다룬 잔잔한 가족물도 생각했지만, 재미가 없을 것 같아 자극적인 전개만 쫓다 보니 전체적인 서사가 붕 떠버린 느낌을 지울 수 없었습니다.

그런데 이렇게 한탄하며 글을 정리하다 보니, 오히려 어떻게 완결을 내야 할지 명확한 ‘각’이 잡혔습니다. ‘체인소맨’이라는 IP와 확실하고 깔끔하게 이별할 수 있는 스토리라인이 떠올랐습니다.

마지막까지 최선을 다해 달려보겠습니다. 부족한 콘텐츠임에도 항상 응원해 주시는 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

Many of you have expressed your sadness regarding the news that the <Denji’s Family> series will conclude with Season 3. I, too, feel a deep sense of bittersweetness.

To be completely honest, when I started Season 3, I didn't have a clear ending in mind. Because of that, the story often strayed from my original intentions, and unnecessary scenes or characters were added. In my pursuit of creating "instant dopamine" moments, I feel that at times, the plot lacked coherence and felt a bit immature.

In fact, until just two hours ago, I was at a complete loss on how to end it. Since the original manga hasn't properly resolved many of its own mysteries, I lacked the confidence to drive the story forward on my own. Part 1, Demon Slayer x Chainsaw, followed the Reze arc’s storyline, and Part 2, Chainsaw Union, had a solid central axis in Makima, much like the original Part 1. This made it possible for me to reference and adapt from the source material.

However, Part 3 was different. Much like Part 2 of the original manga, it was difficult to find a direction because the core characters' goals were unclear. I initially thought about a quiet family story focusing on the conflict between Nayuta and Reze, but I feared it would be boring. In searching for more "dopamine-inducing" plots, the overall narrative felt like it was drifting.

But while writing this post and venting my frustrations, I finally found a clear "vision" for the finale. A storyline came to mind that will allow for a clean and definitive farewell to the Chainsaw Man IP.

I will do my best to run toward the finish line. I am always grateful to those who support me, even despite my shortcomings.
