How is everyone feeling in this weather?
Some people have noticed that their mood has improved and they’re enjoying getting outdoors more. Others are struggling in the heat and staying indoors. Here are a few tips to stay cool during a heatwave
1. Reduce movement. Sounds simple but if you have to walk anywhere or do any activity, slow things down to save energy and not got too hot.
2. Increase your fluids, especially water. Again, sounds simple but not everyone stays hydrated enough when the weather gets hot.
3. Protect yourself - use sunscreen, wear shades, put on a hat.
4. Choose the right clothing. It’s not always about wearing less clothing, it’s about the fabric. If you choose linen, light clothing, breathable fabrics, you should be okay.
5. Stop saying ‘it’s hot, I’m too hot, this weather is too much etc. Everything starts with attitude and mindset. Tell yourself that you can’t change the weather but you can navigate your way through it. Think of the positive ls instead of listing everything you hate about the heat. On that note, avoid social media rants about ‘summer hate’. It will only make you feel worse.

In this month’s Therapy Today, it focuses on how more young adults are accessing therapy. I think this is a good thing because it highlights the importance of therapy being accessible to everyone, no matter what age. It also shows that the stigma around therapy is decreasing. I personally see clients from as young as 18 years old all the way up to 67 years old. Issues and problems are not reserved for any particular age, gender, background. They affect everyone. Being a Therapist (or any profession that involves emotional connection, empathy, active listening, and genuinely being there for others), isn’t just a job, it’s a vocation. You have to really want to do it. You have to live it, breathe it, reflect constantly, be present with your clients, be genuine - genuinely hear and understand them, genuinely care for them, and want the best for them.
If we, as therapists, don’t look after ourselves, it can lead to stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, and an inability to establish strong therapeutic relationships with clients.
My self-care habits include
* Rest
* Meditation
* Limited TV
* Long Walks
* Time with Family, Friends, and Solo Time
Last week, I allocated an hour to trying a new experience when I visited The Floating Spa. It was an amazing experience and I will definitely be visiting again.
