President Donald Trump has initiated a defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and its ownership, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch, demanding at least $10bn in damages following a report about the president's relationship with notorious socialite and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Southern District of Florida on Friday, as Trump works to contain a developing controversy surrounding the Epstein matter that could potentially inflict significant political harm.
Additionally, Trump directed the US Justice Department to petition a Manhattan federal court for the unsealing of grand jury records in both the Epstein case and that of his former partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, who was found guilty in 2021 on five federal counts connected to her involvement in Epstein's abuse of minors.
The defamation suit alleges that Dow Jones, News Corp, Murdoch and two Wall Street Journal journalists acted with malicious intent, resulting in substantial financial and reputational damage to Trump. Dow Jones serves as the newspaper's parent company under the News Corp umbrella.
Prior to filing the lawsuit, Trump posted Friday morning on his Truth Social platform: "I look forward to getting Rupert Murdoch to testify in my lawsuit against him and his 'pile of garbage' newspaper, the WSJ. That will be an interesting experience!!!"
