Minnesota allows 12-year-olds to ride e-scooters, but in many places they cannot ride on the sidewalk and are expected to ride in traffic.

I don’t know about you, but asking a middle-school-aged child to share the road with 4,000-pound vehicles seems backwards to me.

We teach kids to avoid traffic, look both ways, and stay safe. Yet the law often leaves them with two choices: ride in the street or don’t ride at all.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I’d love to understand the reasoning.

Parents, grandparents, and riders…what do you think? Should a 12-year-old be allowed to ride an e-scooter on the sidewalk, or should they be riding in traffic?
