Random ThoughtπŸ’‘A smaller Red Bible (no, not Mao's communist Little Red Book 🀭) has become my travelling companion. I bring it with me almost everywhere I go. It turns 'waiting' time into 'reading' time. Not every moment, of course. Sometimes I still check my phone but most of the time I open this one instead. The notebook is where I record ideas, thoughts, questions and message drafts. Interestingly, the notebook is bigger than the Red Bible in SIZE but the Bible is far greater in VALUE. May God's Word always have the biggest place in our lives.

A Tiny Protest #LeadersAreReaders June 2026

I always notice the same scene whenever I'm at an airport. From the departure hall to the boarding gate and finally on the plane, almost everyone is looking down at a phone, earphones plugged in, endlessly scrolling (I do it too sometimes). But once I've replied to the important messages, I put my phone away. I pull out a BOOK instead. I even print my boarding pass at the kiosk so I don't have to unlock my phone every time the crew asks to see it.

It feels like a tiny protest. Not against technology (I love the convenience very much!) but against the idea that every quiet moment must be entertained by a screen. Research consistently shows that deep reading improves concentration, memory, and empathy, while constant phone switching fragments our attention. So every few chapters I finish feels like a small victory. In a world where everyone is connected to a device, perhaps opening a book is one of the simplest ways to reconnect with your own mind. Perhaps... unless you're listening to a great podcast or audiobook 🀭

Busy But Consistent #LeadersAreReaders May 2026

As a full time ministry worker, reading has always been important to me. Books help me grow in my faith, thinking, ministry and understanding of the world. But now I have a new and wonderful role as well. I am a father to a lively 1 year-old+ son. Life looks very different these days. Between ministry responsibilities, family time, household tasks and caring for a toddler, finding time to read can feel difficult. There are days when I am simply tired by the end of the day.

Yet I do not want to give up reading (in fact, it have become a habit of my life). Instead, I am learning that reading does not always require long, quiet hours. An article that I read reminds us that reading can happen in small pockets of time throughout the day. A few pages at the toilet (don't ask!), 15 minutes before bed, read during breakfast and/or lunch and/or dinner, always bring a book with me, maximise waiting period by reading, cut sosial media or an audiobook while travelling can slowly add up.

The goal is not to finish many books quickly. The goal is to keep learning and growing, even in a busy season of life. Being a father (and team leader) has made my schedule more challenging but it has also made reading more meaningful. If I can stay consistent, even a little at a time, I can continue growing as a disciple, ministry worker, husband, and father. Reading may be harder now but it is still possible and I'll always make it happen! πŸ’―πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘
