Why I Think Adults Should Play More
Truly, play is children’s natural language. They do not have to be taught to play. Children are happy when they play. They develop socially, physically, and mentally as they play. When a child is not playing, you can safely say there is something wrong. Growing up, I heard parents say that when children were sick and could not come to school, or play with their friends, they got sicker. But as soon as they were with their friends to play, they started to feel better. Parents would also say about their children, “He is very intelligent, but he plays too much”. I do not think that it is a coincidence that the one that plays “too much” is the “very intelligent” one. I grew up playing a lot. The adults in my life were very engaging and also took part, joyfully, in the play. I can say the kids I played with as a child were an intelligent bunch. I realized this with the few I was able to reconnect with as adults. We have a different, creative way of looking at things. Some of the adults from my childhood are very old now, but a majority of them are relatively very healthy for their age. I would like to, arguably, attribute this to play activities engaged in during their younger years. An orthopedic I know once said that adults who climb trees as children have a lower chance of developing osteoporosis and other related ailments.
Work, on the other hand, I think, is adults’ “natural language”. Life demands that they earn a living as responsible members of society, so they have to work. With how fast-paced life has become, it is becoming more difficult for adults to find time to play. Because adults cannot play (as they would want to) some explain away not playing with sentences like,
“Play is for children”
“Unserious people play, serious people work”
As legitimate as not having time to play is, it does not remove the effects of it on our lives. Many adults have become sedentary due to the type of work, which requires that they sit for long hours with little or no physical activity. This has accounted for an increase in the occurrence of certain ailments. I have observed that ulcers have become very common among adults these days. The stress of work has caused many other health conditions. I have also observed that friends and family members are checking up on each other less often because everyone is busy. When people play, they are happy. I have observed too, that as adults go about their work, they are irritable; they argue with cab drivers or tricycle riders over small changes that they can do without. They react to seemingly negligible comments. Drivers exchange insults more easily on the roads these days. I honestly think these happen because adults do not play or play enough. I agree that there are other reasons for these, but a lack of play is one significant one among them. One example, as proof of importance of play on our moods is one time, I saw two drivers who were angry at each other, arguing over who had the right of way. They were insulting each other with very harsh words. In the heat of the argument, a passerby made a joke that they could both relate to. They both smiled, apologized to each other, shook hands and laughed over all the names they had called each other. They made more jokes on the same topic and laughed some more before going their separate ways. I believe they would cherish those few minutes for the rest of the day.
For a healthy balance, since both play and work are important, adults have to be deliberate about creating time to play. Play can be any activity that takes your mind off the stress of work and other responsibilities for a while. It can help relax the mind and body. It is usually better when other human beings are involved. This can mean different things to different people. I am glad I have the blessing of playing every day, as I am a teacher; I teach children between the ages of 18 months to 11 years. I look forward to playing with the children every day. This keeps me fit physically, and mentally alert. I have been told I look young for my age. I can say that is one perk of being a teacher of young children. In our playtime, I have learned to look at things differently, which I translate to problem-solving in other areas of my life.
Play is serious and important work.

There is a popular saying that goes thus: "Music is life! " this statement is highly true to my experiences with the talking drum.
In my experience, I would say that talking drum is the life of music.
The talking drum is an ancient instrument that originated in Africa and was used, as a means of communication between tribes. In ancient times Talking drum was used to communicate the onset of war amongst the Southwestern dwellers of Nigeria.
It is any of the various types of drums that, by imitating the rhythm and the rise and fall of words in languages, are used as communication devices.
The common Nigerian talking drum is the hourglass-shaped drum whose speech can be arranged in such a way as to mimic the tone of voice and the core of human speech. It has two drum heads connected by leather tension cords, allowing the player to modulate the pitch of the drum by tightening the cords between the arm and body. The waist of the drum is held between the player's arm and ribs, so when squeezed the drum head tightens and produces a higher note than when it is relaxed. The pitch can be changed during a single beat, producing a chirping note. Thus, the drum can capture the pitch, volume, and rhythm of human speech, though not the qualities of vowels or consonants.
My best experience with the talking drum is when it's used to eulogize someone. Whenever this happens, the person whose praises are being sung is moved to give all he/she has. It is mostly used to eulogize people of high social positions such as Kings, chiefs, or gods.
Talking drums is therapeutic as the presence of a talking drum in a musical show uplifts the soul and brings joy to the minds of the listeners.
