According to the Brazoria County Sheriffβs Office, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle around 12:09 AM. on June 1 near FM 2004 and This Way Street in Lake Jackson. Authorities say the vehicle did not stop, leading to a pursuit.
The Sheriffβs Office states the pursuit ended when the vehicle entered the attached garage of a home in the 100 block of Indian Warrior Trail. During an encounter with the driver, the deputy discharged his firearm. The driver, identified by family members as 18-year-old John Mendoza, was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Family members say John was a student at Texas State University who was home for the summer at the time of the incident.
The Brazoria County Sheriffβs Office has requested assistance from the Texas Rangers, who will lead the investigation alongside the Brazoria County District Attorneyβs Office. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The family of the young man was at the scene and shared video. Family members state that paramedics were delayed in reaching Mendoza because law enforcement vehicles were blocking access to the roadway. The video shows what the scene looked like.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional information has been released at this time.
HPD officers were dispatched to a home earlier this evening in the Magnolia Park neighborhood after reports of a man in the backyard of a home.
When officers arrived, they caught two men. One was found in the backyard, while the other was in the front yard. The two appeared to be together.
The Harris County DIsrrict Attorneyβs Office accepted charges on one of the men on a criminal trespass charge. The second man, described as being in his 40s, was detained, identified, and later released.
Just a few hours later, around 9 PM, Eastside Patrol officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Canal Street following reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they discovered that the shooting victim was the same man who had been released earlier in the evening. He was found lying on the sidewalk.
Witnesses attempted CPR and called 911. Houston Fire Department crews transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
At this time, investigators have not confirmed whether the earlier trespassing incident and the shooting are connected.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers.
Spent time with family and then did a little plant shopping today. I hope everyone had an amazing Sunday!

A Hood News Peep encountered the bandits. An altercation broke out, and one of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot the Peepβs brother in the hand. During the struggle, the victim managed to knock the weapon out of the suspectβs hand. In the chaos, the female who was with the males was also shot in the foot. They left her behind as they fled the scene. We posted video of the bandits running away from the scene.
The Hood News Peep reached out with a better surveillance image of one of the suspects. See below!
The AMBER Alert issued for 6-year-old Kiara Hsieh has been canceled after she was safely located in La Marque, Texas.
Through a quick and diligent investigation coupled with a rapid response, deputies with Constable Mark Hermanβs Office successfully found Kiara. She is currently being evaluated by EMS as a precaution and will soon be reunited with her mother.
Authorities have also taken James Dean Ramirez into custody. Investigators say Ramirez is not the childβs biological father but is the motherβs ex-boyfriend.
βOutstanding work by our Special Operations Unit, Special Victims Unit Investigators, law enforcement partners, and everyone involved in bringing this case to a safe resolution,β said Constable Mark Herman.
