Freedom for the Common Good 🕊️

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Independence Day invites us to give thanks for the gift of freedom and reflect on the responsibility that comes with it.

As Catholics, we are called to use our freedom in service to others by upholding human dignity, protecting the vulnerable, participating faithfully in public life, and working for the common good.

At the Washington State Catholic Conference, this mission guides our advocacy for Life, Justice, and Peace throughout Washington state.

Voting Rights

The July 1, 2026 WSCC Catholic Advocacy Bulletin is now available in English and Spanish.

This month’s bulletin highlights voting as a moral responsibility rooted in Catholic social teaching. Through voting, Catholics participate in public life, promote the common good, uphold human dignity, hold leaders accountable, and help protect the poor and vulnerable.

The WSCC urges Catholics to oppose efforts that would restrict ballot access for eligible citizens and discourage voter participation.

Religious Freedom Week begins today.

From June 22–29, Catholics across the country are invited to pray, reflect, and act in support of religious freedom.

Religious freedom allows faith communities to live out their beliefs in public, serve those in need, advocate for human dignity, and contribute to the common good.

For the Washington State Catholic Conference, religious freedom remains essential to our mission of bringing Catholic teaching into public life and advocating for policies that uphold the dignity of every person.

Join us this week in praying for a society where people of all faiths can freely live, worship, serve, and participate in public life.

Pray for the protection of women and preborn children.

The USCCB’s June 2026 Respect Life Prayer & Action guide invites Catholics to intercede, pray, reflect, and act for the end of abortion and for the protection of women and preborn children.

As the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington state, the WSCC works to bring Life, Justice, and Peace into public life by upholding the dignity and sanctity of every human life — especially the most vulnerable.

This call to prayer also reminds us of our responsibility to advocate for policies that uphold human dignity and protect the vulnerable. During the 2025–2026 legislative session, the WSCC opposed abortion-expansion bills, including SB 5826 and SB 6182, while supporting policies that protect children, families, and those most in need.

This month’s guide offers a simple way to unite prayer with action through prayer, reflection, and sacrifice.

A Path Toward Justice.

The USCCB has released “A National Prayer Service: Honoring the Many Journeys that Shaped America,” a prayer resource for parishes, ministries, and Catholic communities as the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary in 2026.

As the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington state, the WSCC works to bring Life, Justice, and Peace into public life through prayer, reflection, and faithful advocacy for the dignity of every person.

This prayer service invites communities to reflect on welcome, accompaniment, solidarity, remembrance, lament, gratitude, and hope — while renewing our commitment to the Gospel call to welcome the stranger.

Join Catholics across the United States in praying the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus from June 3–11.

This novena draws from the Litany of the Sacred Heart and invites us into prayer, reflection, and deeper devotion to the Heart of Jesus — the source of love, mercy, justice, consolation, and holiness.

The novena concludes with the Consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Action needed by Friday, May 15.

Catholic Mobilizing Network is urging Catholics to submit a public comment opposing a proposed Department of Justice rule that could fast-track reviews of capital cases, reducing the time people have to challenge convictions and death sentences.

In his recent message on the death penalty, Pope Leo XIV reminded us that human dignity is never lost—even after very serious crimes—and that justice can be pursued without recourse to capital punishment.

🕊️ As Catholics, we are called to defend human dignity, seek justice rooted in mercy, and speak up when lives may be placed at greater risk.

Pray for those facing hunger. Act to protect food aid.

Millions of people continue to suffer from hunger, reminding us of our shared responsibility to care for one another and uphold the dignity of the most vulnerable.

In his May prayer intention, Pope Leo XIV invites us to pray that no one might lack the food they need, and that we may grow in gratitude, sharing, and solidarity.

That prayer also calls us to action.

Catholic Relief Services and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are urging Catholics to contact Congress in support of food assistance and humanitarian aid for families here at home and around the world.

As the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington state, the WSCC encourages Catholics to stay informed and raise their voices for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized.
