Since prehistoric times, the sea has been
Indonesia's link with the outside world.
The monsoon winds made sea travel fast and
relatively safe. As a result, overseas migration
began long ago, to places as far away as
Madagascar and Easter lsland. The region was
also part of various trading networks. The islands
exchanged goods among themselves, while
prestige items, like large bronze drums from
North Vietnam, Came from further afield.
In the fifth century Indian culture started to
hold great attraction for parts of Indonesia.
Local rulers began to use Sanskrit - the
language of the Indian elite - and founded
Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms. Between the
seventh and the fifteenth centuries Java had
a flourishing culture that left behind grand
monuments, such as the Buddhist stupa of
Borobudur and the Hindu temple at Prambanan.
How and why this process of cultural exchange
with India began is not entirely clear, but the
Indonesian bronzes from our repository may be
able to shed new light on this. They are so small
that they could easily be brought back by
travellers, and since they are made of bronze
they have remained well preserved. Most of them
were found in Java. However, Java does not have
many metal resources itself, and copper and tin -
the main constituents of bronze - are rare there.
So how did the bronzes get to Java?
