On July 31, 2019, I finally had the opportunity to attend a Long Beach Dub Allstars concert. During that experience, I was also fortunate enough to meet and spend some time with Opie Ortiz, the artist whose work became an essential part of Sublime's visual identity. Opie was incredibly down-to-earth, and we ended up spending a couple of hours hanging out, sharing stories, good💨vibes, and unforgettable memories. It was one of those genuine moments you never expect but never forget.

We took a few photos together, and he was generous enough to sign several of my CDs—many of which featured artwork he had originally created. One of those albums was the one I want to share with all of you today: Sublime (1992), this original Skunk Records release, a true gem for any longtime fan of the band.

I first discovered Sublime in the mid-1990s, and I was instantly drawn to their unique blend of musical styles. Their fusion of reggae, punk rock, ska, dub, and hip-hop opened the door for me to explore an entire world of bands that embraced the same spirit of musical freedom and experimentation.

Here on the channel, you can also find a playlist called "Sublime Archive," named after an old website that once served as a gathering place for fans who shared and celebrated this style of music and the community built around it.

I wanted to share a little piece of my personal history alongside this timeless album. Music has a remarkable way of staying with us through the years, connecting us with incredible people and becoming the soundtrack to some of life's most meaningful moments.

Many years ago, I put together a compilation of love and heartbreak songs entirely in Spanish. It became one of a lot people favorite projects, and I always knew I wanted to revisit the idea someday.

After all this time, I've finally decided to bring it back—this time in English, and divided into two separate mixes. The first one focuses on heartbreak, breakups, and broken hearts; the second will be dedicated to love songs and the brighter side of the story.

This is the first of the two compilations, featuring some of my favorite Punk, Ska, and Reggae-inspired songs about loss, longing, and moving on.

#SkunkRecords is an independent record label founded in 1990 in Long Beach, California, by Michael "Miguel" Happoldt and Bradley Nowell (frontman of Sublime). Originally created to release music for Happoldt’s band The Ziggens, the label quickly became synonymous with the Southern California reggae-punk and ska scene.

Skunk Records is best known for launching the careers of Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, and Long Beach Dub Allstars. The label operated on a DIY ethos, prioritizing artistic freedom and grassroots promotion over commercial marketing.

History and Evolution

The label’s inspiration came in 1989 when Happoldt sought a way to independently release music. After meeting Nowell, Sublime became the label’s flagship act. Skunk released Sublime’s early cassettes and landmark albums like 40 oz. to Freedom (1992) and Robbin’ the Hood (1994).

Following Nowell’s death in 1996, Happoldt continued to run the label independently. By the early 2000s, activity slowed, but Happoldt revived operations in the mid-2000s. In 2009, Skunk entered a distribution partnership with Suburban Noize Records, which later purchased the label and its catalog.

In 2014, Skunk celebrated its 25th anniversary with a tour featuring legacy artists and collaborators. Recent years have seen archival releases and ongoing involvement from Happoldt, including projects with his band Perro Bravo and reissues of classic material.
