What did bears ever do to Doug Walker? Is there anyone he hates even more? Oh right - Phil Collins.

Now imagine bears singing Phil Collins songs in live action Brother Bear… yeah, that’s basically a recipe for nuclear war😆

The scene where Denahi petted Koda is the sweetest thing on Earth. This movie is a masterpiece. The ending beautifully shows the growth of all three characters. Kenai understands his mistakes and learns to be guided by love, Denahi by wisdom, and Koda overcomes his fear of humans.

Watching Brother Bear for the hundredth time, I started wondering: how long were Kenai and Koda actually together on the journey to the Salmon Run? I came to the conclusion that it must have been at least several months, or almost a full year, because the movie clearly shows all four seasons.

At the beginning of the film, when Kenai is still human, we can see that the glaciers are still tightly frozen, but nature is already starting to wake up. That suggests spring. Then, in the middle part of the story, we see blooming plants and fields of dandelions, which clearly point to summer. Later, the salmon arrive at the Salmon Run, something that usually happens in autumn or early winter. Finally, when Kenai confesses to Koda what he did, snow begins to fall. That suggests winter.

All of this suggests that Kenai’s journey lasted almost a year, with each season symbolizing a different stage of his personal transformation. I love every detail of this masterpiece❤️

Concept art of Brother Bear made by Richard Chavez. I suppose this could be the view of the first fight between Denahi and Kenai. But I'm not sure beacuse this snow suggests it's the third act.

Brother Bear is Disney’s deepest film when it comes to its message. Welcome and Great Spirits are perfect examples of a strong parallel between two worlds, humans and bears. In both songs we get to know two different cultures. On the surface they seem completely different, but when you look closer you can see symbolic similarities. Kenai realizes that the bear cubs are like mirror reflections of the children from his village, whom he used to like. Koda and his friends behave the same way Kenai and his brothers do, which is symbolically shown in the scene where they admire the seagulls. A mother hugs her child with the same tenderness, no matter whether it is a bear or a human. Even bears and humans eat the same food and fish in the same way. They tell stories to one another in the same way too. Koda himself is a mirror of Kenai’s actions. He behaves childishly just like Kenai did at the beginning of the film as the youngest brother, but at the same time he combines all the traits of the other brothers, wisdom, love, and guidance. Every single scene in this film has meaning and is for the reason. People criticize it as if they understood none of it. What a shame.

I don’t understand the hate for the song “No Way Out.” I know there was originally a full sequence with dialogue where Kenai literally tells Koda that he killed his mother, but I genuinely think that the song gives the whole scene more subtlety. The viewer already knows the story Kenai is telling, and nothing essential is lost by not hearing every word. The most important lines, “I did something very wrong” and “your mother isn’t coming” remain, and because we don’t hear the entire dialogue, they resonate even more strongly than they did originally. On top of that, the scene becomes more poetic and less literal. The audience doesn’t know exactly what the characters are saying, but their facial expressions say everything. Words don’t really matter when you’ve killed someone’s mother. What could you possibly say to make someone forgive you or even understand? The song replaces words and reveals Kenai’s inner emotions. It’s beautiful, sad, and perfectly synchronized with the animation. It also fits the film’s overall tone. Another strength of this choice is the gradual realization on Koda’s part of what actually happened. Instead of a blunt “I killed the bear,” Koda hears that his mother isn’t coming back, and only then do tears slowly well up in his eyes. I also don’t understand the argument that the song is bad because it would be like playing one during the scene of Mufasa’s death or his ghost. This scene is completely different and deliberately staged that way. You see the camera rise poetically above the characters, you see the snow start to fall, and you see Kenai turn his gaze away. And Phil Collins is Kenai’s inner voice.

Am I really the only one who doesn’t understand this criticism?
