King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, also known as the Reconciliator, the Wise, and later the Old King, was the fourth Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne. He ascended the throne in 48 FS following the death of his uncle, Maegor I Targaryen. His reign lasted 55 years, making him the longest-reigning Targaryen king. He was a dragon rider, and his dragon was Vermithor, the greatest after Balerion and Vhagar. He was a grandson of Aegon the Conqueror.

According to semi-official sources, Jaehaerys had the characteristic purple eyes of the Targaryens. At 16, his hair cascaded freely over his shoulders. Early in his reign, he had a tuft of beard and mustache. By the age of 24, Jaehaerys looked "like a king to the core." The tuft of beard and mustache he had at the beginning of his reign had transformed into a handsome golden beard with silvery hairs. He kept his uncut hair in a braid that reached almost to his waist. Whether on the dance floor or in the training area, the tall and handsome Jaehaerys moved with grace. In later years, his beard turned white and grew to his waist. Yet his posture remained upright. In 84 FS, at the age of fifty, Jaehaerys had lost weight, was almost skin and bones, and his beard and hair now looked more gray than golden. Despite his advanced age, he was wise and dignified. Jaehaerys was very mature for his age. He was a man of gentle speech, generosity, and courage, as well as

He was not one to succumb to dark moods; as he would do many times during his long reign, he set aside his sorrows and devoted himself to the governance of his realm He was a king....
