Why Hon PM of India appeal 'Not to buy Gold for One Year'
In very simple language, If Indians stop buying gold for some time it could create few positive and negative effects...
The benefit would be India may save a large amount of foreign exchange as primarily major part of gold comes from other countries, This would reduce spending in foreign currency and may also help strengthen the rupee value. Another positive result will be investment in banks, fixed deposits, mutual funds, property, or businesses instead of gold. This will certainly support economic growth.
However, there could also be negative impact as, Jewellery shops, goldsmiths, artisans, connected to gold trade may face loss and some downfall of business as sales during weddings and festive seasons will get reduce.
Perhaps Hon PM is thinking that a complete stop in gold buying in India will not happen as gold is linked with, family traditions, social customs & festivals. Few families may postpone purchases. Optimizing the positives & few negatives, will help Indias economy particularly when war, instability is around the neck. In toto, if Indians reduce gold buying for few days, the country will benefit economically but the jewellery sector will feel pressure. Hon PM's Objective is to creat a balance which will support the economy in difficult days.
