Located at about 4100M above sea level, Lake Michaelson is not easy to access unless you have strong knees and legs, or a chopper that can handle such high altitudes. Alternatively, you can talk to Tropical Air and they will gladly bring you to this untampered beauty.
The lake is located along the Chogoria Route, and about 10km from Road End/Head. If you are hiking, you can access it via two routes, one before you get to Mintos, which would mean going to the lake before you summit Point Lenana, and the second route is just before Mintos as you come back from Point Lenana.
Having used the Chogoria Route to Point Lenana twice, I was curious to touch the waters of the Lake, which is quite off the trail, and on my third time on this route, I decided to head down the lake after summiting point Lenana.
As you head down towards the lake, you are surrounded by huge rocks that are not only scenic but also stand tall & elegant to remind you that you are in a different world, a world, untouched and unexplored.
Even before you see the lake, the water cascading down the valleys tells of a good view coming, and trust you me, you will not be disappointed. And as the lake reveals itself, bit by bit you get to appreciate its beauty even more, with the dark grayish waters inviting you to get closer.
What nobody prepares you of, is the hike from the lake and back up to the trail. Itās tough and feels like another summit push, especially if you pass by the lake after summiting Point Lenana.
You can camp by the lake and even fish your dinner, or do a day dash like we did.
This coming Saturday, we head back to Mt.Kenya courtesy of Hikers Arena for a traverse, which means we start at Old Moses, summit Lenana Peak and then head down via the Narumoru route. If you would like to test your physical fitness, you are most welcome to join us. The cost that covers transport to & from Nairobi, park fees and guides is Ksh.6900
You see those rocks behind me, Batian, the second highest peak in Africa (5199m) is up there! And exactly one month ago, I was up there!
Second slide, you can see the joy David, our guide and I were swimming through, because a seamless summit, especially after a day of bad weather is not a guarantee. But here we were, delighted that our efforts had paid off, and the mountains had been kind to us.
A month later, my hands still tell of our experience up those rocks, of the biting cold that ate into my skin, to the point of it peeling off.
The first summit is normally surreal, it never really sinks in. I remember looking at it as we were leaving and saying to myself, āI will see you again soon! You know, just to ascertain that this is realā.
Somebody asked me the other day how it feels to be up here, and honestly, itās a feeling I cannot explain, and that is why I keep going back, to experience it all over again. And if it is worth going back, then it must be really good, a lifetime kind of an experience!
Wherever you see me, bow down and kiss my hand for you are in the presence of greatness.
This is pure madness, pure craziness, yet, also bliss! After only 3 trainings of rock climbing, I aced #Batian, thank you to Martin and Margaret for inspiring and chochaing me to do this! You have to be made of steel to ace Batian.
Thank you to David Kiara our very abled guide, and to Sam for coming along on this trip of madness. Proof that when you set out on a journey, you will meet your kind on the way.
Canāt forget our Rock Climbing trainer at Lukenya, Sebastian. He gave us a proper crash course.
Most importantly, I wanna thank me for having the guts to do this! Mama, I made it!
We did not just summit Batian, but #Lenana too under 24 hours! Goated š
More stories on the hike coming up. For now, let me settle down because I need this to sink in šš½
Some people go around the world looking for that spark, that light, yet they say the zone is not something you find outside you, but in you⦠perhaps what I like most about the mountains is that you go through different life motions altogether! You laugh, you have fun, you see danger, you feel exhausted, excited, you see the edge, but to come so close to it and not tip over, therein lies the beauty of it all!
When I signed up for this marathon, I was like, how I about I hike Mt.Meru, which I had been postponing for a while⦠I donāt think I had properly comprehended the amount of energy and will power that would require but they say experience is the best teacher. Running 21Km from hiking over 45Km is not a walk in the park!
On our way down from summiting Mt.Meru, both of my big toes were injured, I was in a bad shape and I suffered and paid heavily for it.
Despite the unbearable pain, I was determined to show up to the half marathon. Thanks to very strong pain killers that kept the pain at bay, I had a very strong start but by the 15th KM, the fatigue from the hiking seriously caught up and the situation with my toes had got worse. Dizziness started creeping in but I kept pushing determined to see the finishing line. I had to walk the last 200meters, and luckily made it with a fair 1hour 35mins, and a decent position 16 overall. Time to rest and take care of my toes š¬ #CapeToCairoArushaMarathon
