James D. Watson, the molecular biologist who co-discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, has died aged 97.

Photographed here in 1953 (left) with Francis Crick at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, Watson’s work on the structure of DNA transformed genetics and paved the way for modern molecular biology, genome sequencing and today’s understanding of heredity.

His scientific achievements sit alongside a complex legacy.
