ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਪਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਦੋਸਤ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ‘ਆਪੇ’ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਸਕੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਿੱਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁੱਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

‘ਆਪੇ’ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਲਈ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਨਿਯੰਤਰਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਜੋ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ, ਉਹ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਲਕਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ।

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਲੂਝਹਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਸੇ ਸੂਰੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥
Those humble beings who fight with their minds are brave and distinguished heroes.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
Those who realize their own selves, remain forever united with the Lord.

A person's self is his best friend, yet is also one's greatest enemy. If we are able to understand this 'self', victory is obtained over the mind and true happiness is obtained.

In order to understand the 'self', the mind cannot be let loose and unmonitored. Those who do not restraint their minds are weak and will never accomplish any spiritual goal.
