Black Sheep has been saved.
On the surface, that feels like good news.
A well known British brewery lives to fight another day.

But it’s worth asking an awkward question.
If a brewery keeps needing rescuing, what are we actually saving?

This wasn’t a one-off wobble.
Black Sheep has been in serious trouble before, and now it’s happened again.
That usually points to deeper problems, not bad luck.

The obvious pressures are there.
Rising energy costs, raw materials, packaging, transport, and wages.
Pubs selling less beer, and drinkers going out less often.

But plenty of breweries are dealing with the same issues and surviving.
Some are even growing.

So maybe the problem isn’t just costs.
It could be relevance.
It could be distribution.
It could be that today’s drinkers are choosing smaller, fresher, more interesting breweries, rather than familiar regional names.

There’s also the danger of chasing scale.
Trying to be everywhere.
Trying to please supermarkets, investors, and spreadsheets, instead of drinkers.

At some point, nostalgia stops being enough.
Heritage doesn’t pay the bills.
Demand does.

I’m genuinely glad people still have jobs today.
I’m glad the lights stay on for now.

But if a brewery can’t stand on its own feet in the current market, even after multiple rescues, you have to wonder.
Are we saving a brand.
Or just delaying the inevitable?

Is saving heritage breweries always the right call, or should the market be allowed to move on?
