At the Winter Olympics Milano-Cortina 2026 (6–22 February 2026), Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified and suspended from competition after insisting on using his “memory helmet,” decorated with portraits of Ukrainian athletes and coaches who were killed in the war with Russia. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned the helmet on the track, citing rules that prohibit political and propaganda symbols during competitions. After Heraskevych refused to replace it, he was removed from the event. He was supported by Ukrainian luger Olena Smaha, who, on one of the competition days, went onto the track with the message written on her hand: “Remembrance is not a violation,” emphasizing that honoring the memory of the fallen should not be considered a political offense.
