This verse introduces the obligation of fasting in Islam. It reminds believers that fasting is a timeless practice, shared with earlier religious communities, and its ultimate goal is to cultivate TAQWA—a deep awareness of God that shapes behavior, strengthens self-control, and fosters compassion.

In essence, fasting is both a spiritual discipline (drawing closer to Allah) and a social lesson (empathy for others). It is the foundation of the Ramadan injunctions that follow in verses 184–187.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir:
Allah commands the believers to fast, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations during the day with sincere intention for His sake. Fasting purifies the soul, disciplines the body, and cleanses it from bad habits. It was prescribed for Muslims just as it was prescribed for earlier nations, showing continuity in divine guidance. The purpose is to help believers attain TAQWA (God-consciousness), by controlling desires and strengthening obedience.[

Tafsir Ibn ‘Abbas:
Fasting was initially prescribed in a stricter form, similar to the People of the Book, where abstinence extended from night until dawn. Later, Allah eased the rules (see verse 184–187), allowing eating and marital relations at night until dawn. The command emphasizes self-restraint and avoidance of sin.

Tafsir Maududi (Tafheem-ul-Quran):
Fasting is not merely abstaining from food but a spiritual exercise designed to strengthen moral character. It develops patience, discipline, and empathy for the poor, while reminding believers of their dependence on Allah.
