Thomas Cook pioneered organized tourism through package tours and excursions, making travel accessible to the masses. His innovations shaped the modern tourism industry, with a lasting presence in India.

Founder Background
Thomas Cook was born on November 22, 1808, in Derbyshire, England, into a poor family and left school at age 10 to work as a gardener's boy. He became a Baptist preacher and temperance advocate, which inspired his entry into travel by organizing rail excursions for sobriety groups.

First Excursions
In 1841, Cook arranged the world's first package tour: a train trip for 485 people from Leicester to Loughborough, charging one shilling per passenger. By 1845, he launched profit-making tours to Liverpool and Scotland, and in 1851, facilitated travel for 165,000 to the Great Exhibition in London.

Key Innovations
Cook introduced hotel coupons in 1868, traveler's cheques ("Circular Notes") in 1874, and the first round-the-world tour in 1872/73, covering 29,000 miles over 222 days. His company published guidebooks, brochures, and Cook's Excursionist magazine, popularizing mass tourism.

Expansion and Legacy
Partnering with his son in 1872 as Thomas Cook & Son, the business grew globally, including tours to Egypt, the Holy Land, and the US. Cook retired in 1878 and died in 1892; he is credited with democratizing travel for the middle class.

Thomas Cook India
Operations began in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1881 as a branch of the original firm, becoming Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. in 1978. Today, headquartered in Mumbai, it offers holidays, forex, visas, and insurance across 233+ locations in India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius, owned by Fairfax Financial (67.63% stake). It survived the 2019 UK parent collapse and rebranded in 2022.
