The Open Window & The Desert Island 🎹
Today I sat down to play. I was home alone, just me and the keys.
At some point, I got up to open the window, telling myself I just wanted to "let some fresh air in." But as I sat back down, a realization hit me like a dissonant chord: Was I really opening the window for the air, or was I opening it so someone, somewhere, might hear me play?
It made me stop and think about our true drive as musicians. Why do we really play?
Is it pure self-expression for our own ears?
Is it a deep-seated need to reach out and touch another soul?
Or let’s be honest—is it just a bit of ego, craving validation?
Then, I imagined this island. (Look at the picture). 🏝️
If I were stranded on a deserted island with a beautiful grand piano, knowing with 100% certainty that no one would ever hear a single note... would I still practice?
Would I still care about the touch, the groove, the emotion? Or does the music only truly live when there’s a bridge between the player and a listener?
I think we all have that "Open Window" in our hearts. We play for ourselves, but we thrive on the connection.

⏱️ How to make the most of just 10 minutes?
If you're short on time, here’s the perfect way to break it down:
2 Minutes – Warm-up & Fingerwork: Don't jump straight into a song. Let your fingers loosen up with a single scale or a simple technical exercise. It syncs your brain with your hands.
5 Minutes – The "Deep Dive": Don't just play what you already know perfectly. Go straight to the most challenging part of your current piece—those 4 bars where you always get stuck. Practice them slowly and with focus.
3 Minutes – Pure Joy: To finish off, play something you love, something that makes you smile. No judgment, no "correcting"—just play for the soul.
