Nritya Shristi & Beyond

November 11, 1971: While I was looking for pictures from 1971, this popped up from my computer. I started teaching at the age of 15. Choreographed a dance drama Aurpadai Veedu. My dance school was named Himalaya arts centre at that time. I have one or two of my cousins performed also. Today is Shasti; thought it was appropriate to post this picture. Nritya Shristi & Beyond

In 2004, my friend Latha and I conceived the idea for a production called Dances of Nature. The preparations for this event remain unforgettable. My husband, Raj, my mom, and I crafted the costumes ourselves, with my sister, Chaya, also helping to stitch some of them. The opening song was Bhoomi Mangalam by the great sitar maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Inspired by the song, we represented all the elements: Bhoomi (Earth), Water, Fire, Air, Sky, Sun, Moon, Life, Body, Soul, and Peace. The production was 1.5 hours long and featured 40 participants, ranging in age from 4 to adults. We created this production to support the Rime Buddhist Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Now, 20 years later, it’s incredible to see how far everyone has come. Some of the children who began with us at the ages of 4, 5, and 6 have since completed their arangetrams and gone on to become doctors, engineers, and tech professionals. The memories of that time remain vivid, and the impact of Dances of Nature continues to resonate.
