Hey there! I'm Kathryn, an architectural technologist and arkitekt MAA in Denmark.

I've noticed that architecture is often presented as this mysterious field, where geniuses create their vision with the stroke of a pen. Likewise, architecture and design educations are often competitive for access, and oftentimes not accessible for the average person.

This is a channel that aims to break down these barriers, and explain concepts, history, and theory in ways that everyone can learn about, whether you're a history buff, looking to remodel your home, or a kid that wants to figure out if this is the field for you. I hope you'll enjoy your stay, and maybe feel a bit inspired along the way.

I really wish I could be the content creator that makes regular videos for all of you, but true architecture is slow content and I can't rush a good process, I can only publish video when the project is ready for it.

That being said, we have a MAJOR update on its way. I am so excited to share all this with you <3 and I am so proud of how far we have come together.

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all will enjoy the latest video feature - a relaxed update of all the interesting things we navigated over the last 6 months to win our first significant funding milestone for the community center.

Building properly in Denmark is a slow (and expensive) process - but we are one step closer on our road for a building permit application. For a project like this, there's a significant amount of engineering and calculations required - but by collaborating with Artelia as our engineers, I know we will reach the goal.

Artelia also made a really cool digital twin of the building so if you'd like to 'walk through' Eskilstrup Kulturhus, you can do that here:

Dear community,

It gives me enormous joy to share some truly wonderful news:
Our forening Venner af Eskilstrup Kulturhus has received 350.000 DKK from Guldborgsund Municipality’s Landdistriktspulje.

These funds will be used to begin our engineering project together with Artelia, giving us the fire and static engineering we need to move toward our building permit.

So many of you have told me in comments how important it is to save the beautiful curved ceiling in the Great Hall. Thanks to this support - and thanks to Artelia coming on board - that vision is now becoming technically possible.

Good engineering is an art form, and we are incredibly excited to collaborate with their team.

Over the Christmas period, I’ll be sharing a full update covering everything that has happened over the last 6 months - and there is a lot to celebrate.
I hope you will stay tuned, follow along, and celebrate with us when the update drops 🎄✨

Thank you for being part of this journey.
Your support means the world.

Dear community,

Our little community center is in the final stretch of collecting votes for a 1 million DKK construction grant - and we’re so close.

We only need 137 more votes to reach the required 500.

Even if you don’t live in Denmark - or read Danish - you can help.
Just tap the heart icon on the page, and your vote is counted.

It takes less than 5 seconds.

Your support would mean the world to me, and it would make a real impact on this rural project we’ve been building together with local families, elders, kids, and volunteers.

Sharing this one is caring.
Thank you for helping us cross the finish line. ❤️

Still in dialogue with foundations- waiting for things to settle before I come with a large video update.

In the meantime, the community had 150 people visit our Halloween haunted house- and now we are decorating for Christmas together ❤️ ☺️ so wholesome!

Stay tuned!

Dear everyone - still a lot going on with applying for funding. A lot I can't talk about publicly yet and I am waiting to film an update once things click into place.

I just wanted to share that after a good dialogue with the community and our board, I have donated the building to the nonprofit Venner af Eskilstrup Kulturhus, and I am continuing on as a volunteer architect to help see it through to the end. :) This donation formalizes and cements the building's purpose as a public and open third space for all, and also makes our governance a lot clearer for the larger funding institutions, which in my eyes is a win-win.

Doing this really lit a match under our community support and locals are taking ownership, especially the local kids and teenagers, who are really showing up now in full force.

Dagmar, who is 12, has decorated two of the safe rooms in the building for Halloween for the younger kids to enjoy and we will be giving out candy together. I'm really looking forward to celebrating that with everyone - brings back a lot of memories of enjoying the holiday in the US.

My favorite part of this project has been seeing how contagious kindness is, and how much architecture really can mean to people when it is generous and giving. Also in many ways, Eskilstrup has become my Danish hometown, and a place I am very grateful for. Thank you for continuing to follow along!

Over 50 people came to our vernissage to help fundraise with our non-profit for the project - and we recieved support letters from the Museum of Lolland-Falster, the Mayor of Guldborgsund, as well as the local Eskilstrup home owners society!

I'm working on multiple applications these days for large scale funding which is like a full time job on top of my usual job - so not much time to film or put together any videos - but I am taking film in the interim for future videos. But I'll need a few months for things to settle before the next update!

Dear earliest supporters and viewers,

Thanks to your incredible backing, we’ve already been able to make small improvements to the house — including funding the paint for our new public art mural by Kongstad Studio, inspired by the colors, motifs, and symbols of the great hall.

Now, we’re facing our first big project milestone: raising 98,000 DKK to pay for the engineering project required for our building permit. To help us get there, I’m launching something special on Patreon:
patreon.com/theseaweedgirl?utm_medium=clipboard_co…

🎨 The Art Mail Club 🎨 (New Tiers!)
Print Club — 150 DKK / month
A limited edition A5 print of one of my sketches inspired by Lolland & Falster.

Printed on high-quality paper, mailed to you each month.

Collector’s Club — 200 DKK / month
A signed & numbered A5 print each month.

Includes a handwritten thank-you note on the back.

Opportunity to suggest buildings or landmarks you’d like me to paint for future artworks.

The price includes shipping and handlings.

This is more than just collecting prints - it means that you become a part of our momentum, bringing our building to life for the public greater good.

Love from your friendly neighborhood architect,

Kathryn

Thanks to local artists Kongstad Studio, we now have a mural on the facade of Eskilstrup Kulturhus!

It's inspired by the lime painting in the great hall and the layers of wallpaper, including the dandelion.

What do you think of our public community art piece?
