The Journeyman

No wildland firefighter should ever miss a paycheck because the government pays contractors slowly.

It’s the mission behind what The Journeyman is building.

Here’s the reality most people outside wildland fire don’t see:

Contractors finish an assignment. The government issues an OF-286 acknowledging exactly what’s owed. Then everyone waits — sometimes months — while payroll, fuel, hotels, and insurance keep coming due.

The contractors who can float it burn through their own capital. The ones who can’t? Their firefighters go home and wait on paychecks for work they already did.

One husband-and-wife team went three to four months without pay, owed nearly $90,000 between them. The work was done. The government would eventually pay. The paycheck just hadn’t arrived.

Tyler and Brennan lived this at Minuteman EMS. Now they’re building a way for contractors to access working capital against completed government work — so payroll goes out on time, every time, regardless of when the government pays.

Their mentor Todd Gagne wrote about the whole vision on the TJM blog. It’s worth the read — whether you’re a firefighter who’s been on the wrong end of a delayed paycheck, or a contractor tired of floating half a million dollars every season.
