Happy New Year! First accordion video in "The Shed" to start the new year, and hoping to do much more music in 2026 after nearly two and a half years building 'the shed'. A new home for the recordings and space for the music to develop.
Thought this video micht mean a bit more today for those that may have indulged a bittie ower much over the Hogmanay spirits....
Farewell to Whisky was written in 1799, by famous Scottish Fiddler, Niel Gow. After the prohibition of whisky distilling, which followed a poor barley crop, new excise laws all but ended legal whisky distilling in the Highlands. "A Highlander's Farewell to his favourite beverage" as Niel Gow put it.
Thanks for your support. :-)

The Rev. Kim Cran of Blairdaff and Chapel of Garioch.
Northeast Scotland accordionist Ian Thow wrote this tune for the local Reverend. Kim's husband Bill asked me to play a recording of this as a surprise gift for his wife. He emailed me the handwritten accordion sheet music as I'd never heard the tune. I recorded the waltz and thought it a lovely tune. It wasn't until some time later that the composer Ian Thow pointed out that the last two measures of the accordion part are meant to be in Jig time! I had misread the manuscript. Not consciously noticing the 6/8 time signature change, I kept it in a waltz tempo! It sounds hard to believe, but that's what I did by accident. The Piano part on the end was just a bit of unexpected inspiration during the recording.
I hope you like my misinterpretation of a bonnie tune.
Ian has kindly allowed me to share his sheet music for this piece on my website should you wish to play it. He's be really happy to hear folk play his music, as would I.
Try and watch for that Jig part :-)

The track also appears on my album "Out o' the Box" available on CD and Digital.

Here's a cracking Scottish bagpipe tune by Pipe Major William Lawrie. MRS H.L. MacDonald of Dunach. Lawrie was a great piper lost during WW1. Check the description for a little bit of history and a link to download the sheet music. I see the spelling of the name MacDonald or McDonald in different sources. Sometimes the H L is present sometimes it's just Mrs. McDonald of Dunach. The melody is genius, the way iy swings above the bar lines, it glows happiness. 😊

I went for a walk yesterday with the family down by the River Dee. Took some video on my phone and added a track I recorded in 2018 for the album, A Celtic Voice. I wrote both the tunes and you can download the sheet music for free on my website. www.CharlieAbel.com. There are also download links for the track or you can buy the 16 tracks CD album from me direct :-) 🥳🎄

Here's a YouTube preview of my new digital single Macduff Maggie. The track will be available online as soon as the digital gnomes have processed the track. I'll let you know when that's done, I figure it will be in about 2-3 weeks. In the meantime you can watch it here for free as many times as ye like :-).
The video I shot in Macduff on Monday this week. It looked rather beautiful with the sunset arriving I think. There are no visual effects at all used in the video, it's 100% natural footage taken mostly on iPhone 11 and a Canon EOS 700d.
Macduff is a beautiful place, as is most of Scotland.
The song lyrics are also in the video description should you wish to print them out and belt out a chorus or two along with me ;-)
If you decide to help me out via Patreon I will send you a pre release digital master copy for free as a new member.
A' the best,
Charlie

I'm excited to let you know I am releasing a new digital single, it's called 'Jellyfish'. It will be available to download or stream from the usual networks in the few weeks as the digital gnomes are a bit behind due to Corona. However, before the wider world hears it, I have given this YouTube Channel the first in advance exclusive, in full preview, with my latest upload today.
In July I visited the Acquario Di Genova. Italy's largest aquarium. It's an awe-inspiring place with lots of sea creatures. I found the Jellyfish to be quite mesmerising.
The aquarium cleverly used lighting in the tanks to show off their colourful jelly structures.
I had taken some film footage using my mobile phone, and this is the footage I used to make the video. The Jellyfish was the inspiration to make a film with an instrumental piece. I was thinking of something new age and the minor chord progressions came out. Then after that, one morning, the lyrics appeared.
You could say this track is '100% pure Charlie!'
Although, I am very lucky because I had some small funds from my Patrons, I could get the mastering done in California by a mastering studio on fancy audio gear i couldn't afford.
