🌸 Hormonal Acne & PMS in TCM
Ever notice those stubborn breakouts that show up right before your period? In Chinese medicine, premenstrual acne is a clue that there’s an underlying imbalance, not just a skin issue.
🌿 Definition
Hormonal acne typically appears up to a week before menstruation and is commonly found around the chin and jawline.
⚖️ Common Causes
😫 Stress and emotional strain
💼 Overwork
🥡 Irregular diet
🩺 Chronic illness
From a TCM perspective, these factors often disrupt the flow of Qi and Blood, contributing to Heat and stagnation that manifest through the skin.
🎯 Treatment Options
👂 Ear acupuncture points: Adrenal & Subcortex
🥗 Dietary Tip:
Avoid shellfish, which are traditionally considered to generate Wind and may aggravate skin conditions in susceptible individuals.
💡 Clinical Pearl: Pay attention to the timing and location of acne. Breakouts around the chin and jaw before menstruation often point to hormonal fluctuations and may reflect patterns involving Liver Qi stagnation, Heat, or Blood stasis.

🔥 Herpes Zoster (Shingles) in TCM
Also known as Shingles or Zona, Herpes Zoster is caused by the reactivation of the Varicella-Zoster virus and is characterized by painful eruptions along a dermatome, often accompanied by burning, stabbing, or neuralgic pain.
⚡ Did you know? Someone who has never had chickenpox or hasn't developed immunity can contract the virus through contact with shingles lesions.
⚠️ Common Symptoms
🔹 Burning, stabbing, or neuralgic pain
🔹 Vesicular eruptions following a dermatome
🔹 Scalp involvement in some cases
🔹 Post-herpetic neuralgia that may persist for months or even years
This condition is more common in:
👵 The elderly
🛡️ Immunocompromised patients
😷 Those with chronic illness or weakened constitutions
🌿 TCM Perspective
Herpes Zoster often arises from a combination of:
🍷 Excess alcohol consumption
😫 Emotional stress
🦠 External pathogen invasion
🧓 Aging and declining Zheng Qi
⚕️ Chronic disease weakening the body
These factors allow pathogenic Heat and Toxins to lodge in the channels, obstructing the flow of Qi and Blood and causing pain and eruptions.
🎯 Treatment Options
🧠 Scalp acupuncture is highly recommended, especially when lesions affect the head and face.
🧴 Qing Dai cream may be applied daily to the affected scalp area.
💡 Clinical Pearl: In TCM, shingles is often viewed as a manifestation of Damp-Heat, Toxic Heat, and Blood stasis. Addressing the underlying pattern is essential, particularly in cases of persistent post-herpetic neuralgia.

🦴 Rheumatoid Arthritis in TCM
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints, leading to progressive destruction of cartilage and surrounding structures. It affects women more frequently than men.
⚠️ Common Symptoms:
🖐️ Inflammation of the fingers and hand joints
🦵 Pain and swelling in the knees
💪 Elbows and wrists involvement
🦶 Ankle pain and stiffness
🔘 Subcutaneous nodules may develop as the disease progresses
🌿 TCM Perspective
Rheumatoid arthritis is often considered a type of Bi Syndrome, involving the obstruction of Qi and Blood by Wind, Cold, Damp, and/or Heat. Over time, chronic inflammation can lead to Blood stasis and underlying deficiencies of Qi, Blood, or Kidney Essence.
🎯 Treatment Options
👂 Ear acupuncture: Use points corresponding to the affected area
☕ Lifestyle Support:
✨ Drink turmeric and ginger tea daily to help reduce inflammation
🧘 Practice Tai Chi and/or Yoga to improve mobility, balance, and circulation
💡 Clinical pearl: Always differentiate between Cold Bi, Hot Bi, Damp Bi, and chronic deficiency patterns to tailor treatment appropriately.
