THE KINSMAN REDEEMER

In this sermon, Bp. Joseph reflects on the Old Testament reading from the Book of Ruth, explaining how Boaz serves as the “kinsman-redeemer.” He then shows how Christ, as fully God and fully Man, fulfills this role in a perfect and ultimate way.

The sermon explores the ancient biblical understanding of sacrifice, the meaning of blood and expiation, God’s role as Father, and Christ’s role as both Son and Brother. From there, it leads into the heart of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and our salvation as members of Christ’s Bride, the Church.

✠ PASCHAL GRAMMATA ✠
Of His Eminence, ++Rogelio
By the Mercy of God, Presiding Metropolitan of Manila and Luzon

To the Most Reverend Hierarchs, Reverend and Beloved Clergy, Honored Monastics, and all the Christ-loving Faithful of the Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church of the Philippines, the Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in East Asia, and the Ancient Church of the West:

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

Beloved in the Lord,

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

With one heart and one voice, we proclaim the victory which no power of earth or hell can overthrow: “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.” (Matthew 28:6). Christ is risen from the dead, and by His rising He has trampled down death, despoiled Hades, and restored our fallen nature to life and incorruption. The Apostle testifies, “Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9)…

AMBROSE OF MILAN (DEC. 7TH)

St. Ambrose’s imprint is writ large on Western Orthodoxy, from the tradition of chant that he sponsored (Ambrosian Chant is the antiphonal style of singing that became central to the singing of Psalms), his method of catechizing new believers, to his writings that expanded upon Greek Fathers and gave them a distinctively Latin flavor. He was the originator of the oft-hear phrase - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do!" Today we remember this lion of the faith, and strive to be like him, fearless in the face of evil and apostasy, and creative and holy in the exposition of the Gospel!

“Lord Jesus Christ, you are for me medicine when I am sick; you are my strength when I need help; you are life itself when I fear death; you are the way when I long for heaven; you are light when all is dark; you are my food when I need nourishment.”

Collect

ALMIGHTY GOD, who made the Bishop Saint Ambrose a teacher of the Catholic and Orthodox Faith and a model of apostolic courage in the face of heresy, raise up in Thy Church men after Thine own heart, to serve her with courage and wisdom. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end! Amen.

St. Ambrose, pray for us!

OF LILLIES AND SPARROWS

In this sermon for the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity, Bp. Joseph reflects on Christ’s words in Matthew 6 concerning the lilies of the field and the sparrows under the Father’s care. He considers the Nazarite consecration of single-minded devotion in the Book of Numbers and the meaning of St. Paul’s exhortation in Galatians. We also remember Our Lady of Walsingham, St. John the Evangelist and Theologian, St. Thecla the Equal to the Apostles, St. Silouan the Athonite, and the Blessed Lancelot Andrewes, whose falling-asleep in the Lord is commemorated on this date.

In these Scriptures, in the lives of the saints, and in the contemplation of wildflowers, simple birds, and the Book of Creation, there emerges a vision for the Christian life that is both childlike and full of awe, yet mature and peaceable - able to bear the stresses and trials of our days. May God grant you a blessed and restful Sabbath as you seek Him above all things.

THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (SEPT. 28TH)

INTROIT
PSALM 86

Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me: my God, save thy servant, that putteth his trust in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord, for I will call daily upon thee. Comfort the soul of thy servant, for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

COLLECTS

ALMIGHTY FATHER, whose holy Son Jesus Christ was born of a pure and Sinless Virgin, grant that like as we do pray once more for the renewal and conversion of England, so may she whose dowry England is, provide her intercession with thy son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O GRACIOUS LORD, who didst endue thy holy servant Thecla with boldness to proclaim thy Gospel and with steadfastness to endure all manner of trials: Grant us, we beseech thee, a like courage and devotion, that, being inspired by her example, we may with unshaken faith bear witness to thy truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who hast revealed unto thy holy Apostle and Evangelist Saint John the deep things of thy Word, and through him hast borne witness unto the Eternal Word made flesh, thy Son Jesus Christ: Grant, we beseech thee, that we, being illumined by the light of his doctrine, and inflamed with the fire of his love, may ever hold fast the truth of the Gospel, and walk in the way that leadeth to eternal life; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

ST. SILOUAN THE ATHONITE (SEPT. 24)

Born in 1866 in Russia, St. Silouan struggled in his youth but was led by repentance to Mount Athos, where he became a monk at St. Panteleimon Monastery. There he lived a life of deep humility, prayer, and love for all mankind. After a vision of Christ, he endured years of spiritual trial, learning the counsel of God: “Keep your mind in hell, and despair not.” His teaching of love, humility, and prayer for the world continues to inspire Christians everywhere. He reposed in 1938, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and wisdom.

COLLECT

O ALMIGHTY GOD, who didst raise up thy servant St. Silouan to the heights of humility and unceasing prayer: Grant us grace, we beseech thee, to keep our minds in thy holy presence, even in times of trial, and to trust in thy boundless mercy; that following his example, we may love our enemies, pray for the world, and find in Thee our eternal rest; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ST. SILOUAN THE ATHONITE (SEPT. 24TH)

St. Silouan the Athonite was born Simeon Ivanovich Antonov in 1866 in the Russian village of Shovsk, to a humble family of devout peasants. From a young age, Simeon exhibited a natural piety, and his heart longed for God. Though he lived a simple rural life, he was drawn to prayer, but his early years were marked by a struggle with worldly passions. Like many young men of his time, he was caught up in the vigor of youth, but in his twenties, a profound experience turned his heart decisively towards the path of holiness.

The turning point came when, after an episode of sinful indulgence, Simeon had a dream in which he saw a serpent slithering down his throat. Deeply shaken by this terrifying vision, he sought repentance and the mercy of God. Shortly after this, he enlisted in the Imperial Army, but he never lost his desire for monastic life. After completing his service, Simeon left Russia in 1892 to become a monk at the famed Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos, the "Holy Mountain."

Upon entering the monastery, he took the name Silouan, in honor of St. Silvanus, an early Christian martyr. His spiritual life on Athos was characterized by intense asceticism, prolonged periods of prayer, and unceasing love for his brethren. His yearning for God deepened when, after a period of intense inner struggle, Christ Himself appeared to him in a vision, filling his soul with divine grace. The memory of this encounter remained vivid in St. Silouan’s heart throughout his life, and it became the cornerstone of his spiritual journey.

Despite this extraordinary experience, St. Silouan suffered greatly from spiritual desolation and demonic temptations. He often felt the absence of God, which plunged him into profound anguish. Yet, it was in this suffering that he learned the virtue of humility. It is said that he heard a voice from God saying, “Keep your mind in hell, and despair not.” This paradoxical counsel became his guiding principle, teaching him that the path to salvation was found in the depth of humility and trust in God’s mercy, even in the midst of torment.

St. Silouan’s asceticism was marked by an exceptional love for humanity. He wept not only for his own sins but for the sins of the entire world. His deep compassion extended even to those far from the faith. He prayed fervently for all mankind, especially those who did not know God, desiring that all would come to know the love of Christ. His heart was enlarged with a love that reflected the boundless mercy of God, and he often said, "The greater the love, the greater the suffering."

Though he lived in relative obscurity on Mount Athos, St. Silouan’s wisdom was recognized by his fellow monks. His teachings emphasized the importance of the Holy Spirit and the necessity of maintaining inner peace through prayer, even in the face of inner turmoil. His humble yet profound writings, recorded by his spiritual son, Archimandrite Sophrony, would later inspire Christians around the world.

St. Silouan reposed in the Lord on September 24, 1938, after a lifetime of spiritual struggle and prayer. He left behind a legacy of profound spiritual insight, teaching that true Christian life is inseparable from love, humility, and prayer for all. His writings, particularly on the spiritual warfare and the love of enemies, continue to influence Eastern and Western Christians alike, calling them to a deeper life in Christ.

COLLECT

OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM (SEPT. 24TH)

Happy Feast Day of Our Lady of Walsingham! May you be blessed and protected, held at the prayers of the Holy Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary today and always!

Our Lady of Walsingham is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated by English Christians associated with the Marian apparitions to Richeldis de Faverches, a pious English noblewoman, in 1061 in the village of Walsingham in Norfolk, England. Lady Richeldis had a structure built named "The Holy House" in Walsingham which later became a shrine and place of pilgrimage.

According to the tradition, in a Marian apparition to Lady Richeldis, the Blessed Virgin Mary fetched Richeldis’ soul from England to Nazareth during a religious ecstasy to show the house where the Holy Family once lived and in which the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel occurred. Richeldis was given the task of building a replica house in her village, in England. The building came to be known as the "Holy House", and later became both a shrine and a focus of pilgrimage to Walsingham.

COLLECT

Almighty Father, whose holy Son Jesus Christ was born of a pure and Sinless Virgin, grant that like as we do pray once more for the renewal and conversion of England, so may she whose dowry England is, provide her intercession with thy son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
