పగలు కూడా అక్కడ చీకటి కమ్ముకున్నట్టే అనిపించేది.

ఆ ఇంట్లో ఎన్నో సంవత్సరాలుగా ఎవరూ నివసించలేదు.
గ్రామస్థులు ఆ ఇంటి దగ్గరకు కూడా వెళ్లడానికి భయపడేవారు.
“ఆ ఇంట్లో ఏదో ఉంది…” అని మాత్రమే చెప్పేవారు.
కానీ అసలు నిజం ఎవరికి తెలియదు.

ఒక రోజు నగరం నుంచి వచ్చిన ఒక టూరిస్ట్, ఆసక్తితో ఆ ఇంట్లోకి వెళ్లాడు.
లోపలికి వెళ్లిన కొద్ది నిమిషాల తర్వాత బయటకు వచ్చాడు.
కానీ అతని ప్రవర్తన పూర్తిగా మారిపోయింది.

అతను వరుసగా, ఆగకుండా నవ్వడం ప్రారంభించాడు.
ఆ నవ్వు నెమ్మదిగా భయంకరంగా మారింది.
ఎవరూ ఆపలేకపోయారు.
రాత్రంతా నవ్వుతూనే ఉండి చివరికి రక్తం కారే వరకు నవ్వి చనిపోయాడు.

ఆ సంఘటనతో గ్రామం మొత్తం భయంతో వణికిపోయింది.
ఆ ఇంటి దగ్గరకు ఎవరూ వెళ్లలేదు.

కాలం మారింది.

వ్యాపారవేత్త ఆ విగ్రహాన్ని ఇంటి ప్రవేశ ద్వారం దగ్గర పెట్టించాడు.
కానీ ఒక పూజారి హెచ్చరించాడు.

“ఈ విగ్రహం కళ్లను మందమైన గాజుతో కప్పి పెట్టండి… ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లోనూ నేరుగా చూడకండి…”

ఎందుకు అని అడిగినా పూజారి కారణం చెప్పలేదు.

ఆ కుటుంబం ఆశ్చర్యకరంగా చాలా సంతోషంగా జీవించింది.

ఒక రోజు ఒక పోలీస్ ఆ ఇంటికి విచారణ కోసం వచ్చాడు.
అతను ఆ విగ్రహాన్ని గమనించాడు కానీ ఏమీ అనలేదు.

మరుసటి రోజు…

ఆ పోలీస్ ఆగకుండా సిగరెట్లు తాగడం ప్రారంభించాడు.
ఒక్క నిమిషం కూడా ఆపలేదు.
రక్తం దగ్గుతూ, శ్వాస ఆడక చివరకు మరణించాడు.

అది ఒక ప్రమాదంగా భావించారు.

కానీ కొన్ని వారాల తర్వాత, మరో రాష్ట్రంలో ఒక మహిళ విచిత్రంగా చనిపోయింది.
ఆమె ఆగకుండా స్వీట్లు తింటూనే ఉండి మరణించింది.

కొన్ని రోజుల తర్వాత ఒక భయంకరమైన నిజం బయటపడింది.

మరణానికి కొన్ని రోజుల ముందు ఆ వ్యాపారవేత్త ఇంటికి వెళ్లారు.

పోలీసులు వెంటనే ఆ ఇంటిని పూర్తిగా వెతికారు.
కానీ అనుమానాస్పదంగా ఏమీ దొరకలేదు.

అందరూ వెళ్లిపోతుండగా, ఒక పోలీస్ ఆ విగ్రహాన్ని గమనించాడు.

“ఈ కళ్లను ఎందుకు కప్పారు?” అని అడిగాడు.

వ్యాపారవేత్త సమాధానమిచ్చాడు.

“ఒక పూజారి అలా చేయమన్నాడు. అసలు కారణం నాకు కూడా తెలియదు.”

ఆ పోలీస్ నవ్వుతూ గాజును తొలగించాడు.

మొదటిసారి…
ఆ విగ్రహం కళ్లు నేరుగా కనిపించాయి.

ఆ కళ్లు జీవించి ఉన్నట్టుగా మెరిశాయి.

ఒక్క క్షణం అతను వాటిని చూసి అక్కడి నుంచి వెళ్లిపోయాడు.

మరుసటి రోజు…

అతను ఆగకుండా ఈత కొడుతూనే ఉన్నాడు.
నీళ్లలో నుంచి బయటకు రావడం మానేశాడు.
చివరకు అలసిపోయి మునిగి చనిపోయాడు.

అప్పుడు పోలీసులకు నిజం అర్థమైంది.

ఆ విగ్రహం కళ్లను చూసినవారు…
తమకు అత్యంత ఇష్టమైన పనిని ఆగకుండా చేస్తూ మరణిస్తున్నారు.

కానీ వ్యాపారవేత్త మాత్రం ఎందుకు బ్రతికున్నాడు?

ఆమె నిజమైన కళ్లను తీసి ఆ విగ్రహంలో అమర్చారు.

కానీ ఆమె ఆత్మకు శాంతి లభించలేదు.

ఆమె చివరిసారిగా చూసింది…
తనను హింసించిన దొంగల ముఖాలనే.

పోలీసులు వెంటనే పూజారులను పిలిపించారు.

ఆ విగ్రహం కళ్లలోని వెలుగు నెమ్మదిగా మాయమైంది.

ఆ ఇంటి చుట్టూ ఎన్నో సంవత్సరాల తర్వాత మొదటిసారి ప్రశాంతమైన గాలి వీచింది.
