My wife once caused a major stir for us in a meeting. I had always been cautioning her, but this time it was serious. It was a ministers’ conference, and she was preaching her session. While she was preaching, she made an analogy that took away our appetite—nobody could eat after that statement.

I quietly went to my hotel room and lay down, reflecting on what she said. She said, “A doctor is trained to look at a sick person, and even with experience, he can say, ‘This is what is wrong with this person.’ Then he prescribes medication—two in the morning, two in the afternoon, two at night. Sometimes they run tests in the lab, make a more accurate assessment, and may even recommend immediate surgery. Then they take the person in. Is that true?”

She continued, “Educationalists develop curriculums. They choose subjects with a clear intention of what the student will become at the end of their studies. Is that right? That is their job.”

Then she said, “But the job of a priest in the New Testament is not to prescribe medication. It is to prescribe God to the people. If anybody is sick, you don’t ask, ‘Have you taken your medication?’ You say, ‘The Scripture says the Lord is my healer.’ Then you pray, ‘In the name of Jesus, be healed.’”

She said to us, “Stop prescribing medication to church members because you are not doctors. Prescribe the power of the gospel to your members and declare, ‘Be healed! Be free!’ Stop doing the doctor’s job. Somebody is already being paid for that. You do your own job—look for demons and cast them out. Look for the sick and pronounce healing. Then you get paid for using the power of God correctly.”

Even me, I had prescribed medication to people before. I would say, “Take this.” But from that day, my mindset changed. Something shifted in my mind. Are you getting it?

I used to say, “Your body is warm. Have you taken paracetamol?” But then I remembered her voice: “That is not your job.”

Your job is to say, “You still have a temperature? Get on your knees. In the name of Jesus, I crush this temperature and bring you back into full health.” Then you ask, “How are you feeling now?” And they say, “I feel normal.” Then you say, “Okay, go home.”

But some of us are very good at prescribing medication. Anybody still thinking about the problem my wife caused—it was a big one. From that day, I began to pray. I used to pray in Yoruba, “Lord, help me. Let Your Word in my mouth become authority so that I stop struggling between medication and faith. Let me grow in faith and become an authority in it.”

Am I against medication? Not at all. If I were, we would not have a hospital. We even have a hospital as a ministry serving the community. So, I am not against medical science. They are doing their job.

But I am not a doctor—I am a priest. Do you get the difference?

Can God empower you today so that when they want to take someone to the hospital, you say, “Hold on, don’t take them yet—I am here.” Is that okay? I am here.

“What is the matter?”
“This is the issue.”
“Okay, in the name of Jesus, you are free by the power of God. Now do what you couldn’t do before.”

Then you can say, “Go and see your doctor to run tests and confirm your healing.”

That word can change everything about you. Have you read in your Bible: “He sent forth His Word, and the Word healed them and delivered them”? That is your profession.

A New Testament minister is a man who ministers in power, and whose words do not fall to the ground.
