Frugal Queen in France.
Welcome to our channel. We are Jane and Mike, British early retirees living in France. We live a thrifty debt and mortgage free life and love every minute of it. On our channel we share: money saving, thrifty living, home cooking, budgeting, simple living and everyday frugality. We put out three videos every week at 5pm Paris time. Wednesday is our mid week money chat which has a financial focus. Friday is all about food and saving money in the kitchen from meal planning to cooking an affordable homemade meal. Sunday shows a personal side of our life and can be anything from a budgeting video to a free day out somewhere in our part of France.

Mike is still on the sewing studio. I'm making dog blankets for the rescue dogs. It's a good day for inside jobs. Normally this is what we'd do in the height of summer.

Never underestimate your ability to help! I've been asked to put a backing on these crocheted blankets to be used as dog beds for the rescues. Of course I will and with pleasure! I can never say no to animals in need!

It's early morning and I have opened all the windows to let the cool morning air in. The house has come into its own. We're in a weather phenomenon where heat and dust has come up from the Sahara and landed over our end of Europe with the highest temperatures ever recorded at this time of year and even countries as far north as the UK are hot for May. I should add that we love this warmer weather and if you take like at a slow southern pace then it's to be enjoyed.
Thankfully our old stone house with thick walls keep the inside of the house at 24°c and the night temperature drops to 20°c. Our fly screens are up keeping out the biting buzzing little buggers who love to bite us and make us itch! Our pompe a-air-air system /mini-split is in with a million thanks to Blondet from Limoux. That will cool us when required and heat us in the winter. It was an affordable option instead of a pompe à chaleur/heat pump system. However, we will be sensible and use it when needed and not for the sake of it. So, we cool our house at night and early morning and it stays relatively cool until mid afternoon when the heat peaks. The heat will reach 35°c today /95f which is a July/August temperature and unusual for this time of year. Our dogs are enjoying the cool tiled floors which stay cool under our bare feet. The dogs are walked at dawn whilst it's still cool.

If yesterday's video was of interest to you. Course de Côte de Quillan. Here's last year's official race video. Well done Quillan for hosting this annually.

When I was young, a trip abroad or a holiday was the stuff of dreams. I didn't leave the UK until was 36. I used to watch Judith Chalmers who showed us where we could go. We all dreamed of ski slopes, beaches, the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, Greece, the South of France and the rest of the world. I had a pinch myself moment today as I looked across the mountains, that little me, crossed legs in front of the TV, in her dressing gown on a Sunday night who never thought in her wildest dreams that she would ever visit the South of France let alone live there. RIP Judith Chalmers

I am a determined person! I climbed a 'mountain' for a good view of the race on the Col de Portel in Quillan

What a beautiful day! It's the hottest part of the day and still ok for a gentle walk. There's a time trial on the Col de Portel here in Quillan tomorrow. The cars are mostly here and with any luck we will get to watch some of the cars tomorrow. I've always loved motor sports and especially classic old cars. It's incredibly noisy and really marks the beginning of the summer season here. Thankfully there's plenty of shade for the competitors who look ready for tomorrow.

When we share that we don't eat out, nor get takeout, it can provoke a few people to respond with derision. How can you live in France and not be a gourmand and not enjoy the French restaurant culture. We manage exactly in the same way as the millions of French people who also don't eat in restaurants. The same millions who don't frequent cafés and bars as they are not able to economically. I'm sure no one would knock on their doors and tell them to get another job on top of their job so they could eat out. Nor would anyone feel the need to tell them that they're missing out by not eating out.
In tomorrow's frugal food on Friday video I will share how I don't like cooking but don't have the money to eat out and what I do so I don't feel as if I'm missing out.
I will also share French restaurant, cafe and bistro culture and how 'going out for breakfast' or 'just having a starter' isn't a thing nor is sharing a meal.
