Why Thai Students Honor Their Teachers with Flowers 🌸🙏
Ever wondered why Thai students bring elaborate flower trays to their teachers? It’s not just for show—it’s part of a beautiful, centuries-old tradition called Wai Khru.
In Thailand, a teacher is considered a second parent, and the Wai Khru ceremony is the most important day to show gratitude for their guidance. But did you know that the specific items on the tray actually hold deep symbolic meaning?
Here’s what each piece represents:
Ixora Flower (Dok Khem): Represents a sharp, alert, and intelligent mind.
Bermuda Grass (Ya Phraek): Symbolizes resilience and the ability to learn even under tough conditions.
Popped Rice (Khao Tok): A reminder of the discipline required to grow and be "molded" into a knowledgeable person.
Eggplant Flower (Dok Ma Khue): Symbolizes humility and respect—much like the flower bows its head, a student shows grace toward their teacher.
Wai Khru is more than just a ceremony; it’s a moment that defines the bond between student and teacher, grounded in respect and lifelong appreciation. It’s no wonder so many teachers who have worked in Thailand remember this day as one of the most touching parts of their careers.
Have you ever experienced a Wai Khru ceremony? Let me know in the comments! 👇
