Once upon a time, someone told me that piano improvisation couldn’t be learned. Either you’ve got it, or you don’t. I believed them for a while... until I didn’t. Years later, after a hand injury put an end to my concert pianist ambitions, I ended up alone at a piano, late at night, just playing. I started to improvise. And, eventually, I figured out that you can actually learn it. Or at least pretend to.
These days, improvising is my way of getting lost. Sometimes it happens on a piano, sometimes on my vintage Fender Rhodes. When I improvise, time seems to disappear. Mistakes happen, and occasionally something beautiful comes out when I’m not paying attention. This channel documents my process through solo piano and Fender Rhodes improvisations. It is also an invitation to you. Come listen to me make mistakes. Or, even better, try improvising yourself.
