On my newsletter, i take time to drop lessons I have learned in my family life and this one seems to resonate. Not judging anyone, this is my personal experience and regret.

I don’t believe in debt. I hate it, no credit cards, loans etc, mainly because I don’t take interest. In Islam, riba — interest — isn’t just discouraged. It’s prohibited, yet I am deeply ashamed to admit I have fallen short in this area.

I took out a mortgage, I’m still not over it. I convinced myself it was for my family. At the time, I was becoming a father and I saw it as protection. A few houses later, even now, sitting in this house with my boys running around in it, I still feel the same.

The practical reasons don’t make the feeling go away. The decision made ‘sense’, but my spirit wrestles with it everyday. In fact, for the first few months, I stopped going to the mosque, expect on Fridays, when I would dash in quickly and disappear before I spoke to any of the brothers. I felt like I was living a lie. Because I said it to myself. You’re standing here saying you believe one thing and you’re living something else. You chose it. I made a compromise, and I haven’t closed the gap between them. That’s just the honest answer.
The rest of my financial life I’ve held the line.
No credit cards. I don’t care about the points or the cashback. I know, this is none of the smart financial advice, I just hate the temptation. That’s my personality; abstain. I’ve watched what debt does to people up close, the way it starts small and reasonable and turns into background noise you can’t switch off. Babi knows where I stand on this. It stopped being a conversation a long time ago. No loans. No buy now pay later. If I can’t buy it I don’t have it yet.

It’s difficult being two people with different relationships to money trying to run one household. We fixed that by sitting down and building something we’d actually use.
That’s also why Babi and I built The Budget Template — For Couples. It covers everything, income, household costs, personal spending for both of you, savings, what you owe. We put it out because a lot of couples want to have the money conversation and genuinely don’t know how to start it. Most couples who fight about money aren’t actually fighting about money. They’re fighting because one person knows what’s going on and the other doesn’t. Or neither of them does. And the gap between what you think your life costs and what it actually costs. It’s also the best way to define how far you are from where you want to be, and how to get there.

Paying off my mortgage as soon as possible is my goal right now. That’s uncomfortable. Some people will say go easier on yourself. You made the call you had to make, let it go. But I disagree.

“Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you.”

Every time, I have sacrificed for God, it has never failed me. This is a cautionary tale, but not an ungrateful one. I am say thank you everyday, for the roof over my family, the money to afford it, health and the love in my life.

We all make mistakes, but the objective is to learn from them.
