ℹ️ For the study, a total of around 3,600 people from 25 countries were surveyed via telephone, face-to-face and online interviews – including on other topics such as having an abortion, drinking alcohol, gambling, having an extramarital affair, using marijuana and viewing pornography. Participants were able to choose whether they considered the topic in question to be morally unacceptable, morally acceptable or not a moral issue. The latter two options were grouped together as “not morally wrong”.

Traditional gender roles – yes or no?
A recent study by the Ipsos Institute published on International Women's Day shows that Gen Z is becoming increasingly conservative worldwide, particularly men. We asked the researchers for additional data on Europeans' attitudes – and it turns out that regarding some questions, young people in Europe are even more conservative than the global average.
For example, only 34% of the Gen Z men surveyed in Europe believe that women with successful careers are more attractive – below the study average of 41%. When it comes to beauty standards, we see the opposite: while 35% of Gen Z men surveyed believe that women should try to be physically attractive, only 27% of the European Gen Z men surveyed agree.
The fact that Europe's Gen Z is becoming increasingly conservative could be related to trends on social media. So-called tradwives and masculinity coaches are propagating increasingly traditional and sometimes discriminatory conceptions of men and women.
A brief note on methodology: When we refer to Europe's Gen Z in this study, we are referring to Belgium, France, Germany, the UK, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey. Other European countries were not included in the survey.
