Vox Cantorum - Voice of History

Hi everyone! Incase you're new around here, I’m a Singaporean history content creator and I just finished a documentary I’ve been working on for 3 months (phew!)

It started with a 1903 recording called “Lagu Dari Nandoeng Sayang”; the oldest known recording originating from Singapore.

That got me thinking: If the oldest known record we have is from 1903, what happened to all the other songs?

What struck me most was this: We have archives of Japanese songs imposed on locals. But we barely know what ordinary Singaporeans sang in Hokkien, Cantonese, Malay, Tamil.

Those songs may simply be gone.

If you had grandparents who lived through the Occupation — did they ever mention songs from that time?

Would genuinely love to hear your stories!
