Omupo Descendants Union Pays NECO Fees for Indigent Students
Hope has returned to several families in Omupo, Kwara State, after the Omupo Descendants Union announced the payment of NECO examination fees for 20 indigent students in the community.
The intervention targets brilliant students who risked missing the examination because of financial difficulties.
According to a statement signed Tajudeen Adigun, the beneficiaries were selected from the town’s two major public secondary schools — Omupo Grammar School and Omupo Muslim College.
The initiative, driven by concerned stakeholders and education advocates under the platform of the Omupo Descendants Union, is aimed at ensuring that talented students are not denied opportunities to continue their education because of poverty.
The union explained that the support would also help prevent the schools from facing possible de-recognition by the examination body due to low participation or failure to meet required examination conditions.
In many parts of Nigeria, rising economic hardship has continued to affect students preparing for external examinations, with some parents struggling to pay registration fees for WAEC and NECO.
The Omupo Descendants Union said the latest intervention reflects its commitment to protecting the future of education in the town and supporting academically promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The organisation also called on alumni groups, community stakeholders, philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to support the initiative and invest more in education within the community.
According to the union, helping students complete their secondary education would not only improve individual lives but also strengthen the long-term development of the community.

Outrage as Amnesty slams Wike over ‘I would have shot him’ remark
Global rights group Amnesty International has condemned comments by Nyesom Wike after he suggested he would have shot a journalist during a live broadcast.
The minister made the remark while reacting to questions linked to political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections. His comments were directed at Channels TV presenter Seun Okinbaloye, sparking widespread backlash.
In a statement, Amnesty described the outburst as “reckless and dangerous”, warning it could incite violence against journalists and undermine press freedom in Nigeria.
The organisation said such language from a senior government official risks normalising threats against media professionals simply for doing their job.
It also noted that the remarks may breach Nigeria’s broadcasting code, urging regulators to take the issue seriously.
Amnesty has now called on Wike to withdraw his statement and issue a public apology, stressing that public officials must be held accountable for words that could endanger lives.
📰 The incident has reignited concerns over media safety and political rhetoric in Nigeria.

Nigerian Army honours 10 retired generals in Lagos parade
The Nigerian Army Finance Corps has held a valedictory parade in Lagos to honour 10 senior officers who recently retired from service.
The ceremony took place on Friday at the Nigerian Army School of Signals Parade Ground in Apapa, according to a statement released on Saturday by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division.
Those honoured included Major Generals KI Yusuf, AA Fayemiwo, J Mohammed, RN Ochei, MO Ihanuwaze, M Galadima and SA Gumel, alongside Brigadier Generals EA Obona, AS Maikano and MK Baba-Mallam.
Major General Kamal Ishola Yusuf (retd.), who served as Special Guest of Honour, described the event as one of the most dignified parades he had witnessed in his military career.
In his valedictory address, Yusuf said the armed forces remained one of the country’s strongest custodians of tradition, adding that long-standing customs continued to define the Army’s discipline, values and sense of purpose.
He said the pulling-out parade reflected the Nigerian Army’s commitment to preserving its heritage, noting that the Finance Corps had continued to thrive by respecting its history while adapting to modern demands.
