Mindfulness Hub - Esen Sekerkarar
Ten years ago, at a mindfulness retreat in Spain, my life changed.
Much of the chronic pain I had lived with after two accidents disappeared, and never returned. That retreat marked the beginning of my journey into the University of Massachusetts MBSR Teacher Training Program. I knew then that this was the direction my life would take.
At the time, I was living in Denmark. With a radical decision, I began my training. In the years that followed, I founded my own company, led group programs, delivered corporate trainings, collaborated with hospitals and schools, and spent years offering individual sessions at a psychology clinic in Copenhagen.
Then came England. Then Türkiye during the pandemic. And now, Portugal.
Ten full years. 🙏
“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf,” says Jon Kabat-Zinn. My deepest training, though, has been life itself, especially what happens beneath the wave.
Health challenges. Professional struggles. Heartbreak. Loss. Unexpected change. Standing beside loved ones in their pain. All of it is part of the surfing, not the glamorous image of riding high on the crest.
The real tests unfold underwater: fear, uncertainty, resistance, the urge to escape, grief, loneliness.
These ten years have held beautiful memories, and pain I could not have imagined. The greatest gift has been learning, through mindfulness, not to run from what lies beneath. That has been my true training ground: learning emotional surfing and supporting others through it.
Contrary to what we might think, the real lesson is not about strengthening your muscles and skillfully jumping onto the board. It is about softening. Releasing. Allowing yourself to be carried under, trusting that the same force that knocks you down will lift you back up.
Life is a teacher with a soft heart and tough lessons. Its language, I believe, is mindfulness. As we learn that language, we begin to understand the oceans and waves within ourselves.
Here’s to many more decades.
