Case Highlight: From Progressive Limb Weakness to Recovery Through Advanced Spine Surgery
A 35-year-old man came to our hospital with gradually worsening numbness and weakness in his arms and legs over three weeks. His symptoms began in the left arm, then spread to the left leg, and later affected the right side. He also had upper back pain after heavy lifting.
On examination, our specialists found increased reflexes in both the arms and legs, raising concern for pressure on the spinal cord. An MRI scan confirmed severe compression of the spinal cord in the neck caused by a slipped disc between the 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae (C4โC5).
Our neurosurgical team led by Dr. Mulualem Wondafrash, successfully performed a delicate and highly specialized operation called Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF). Through a carefully planned incision and localization using C- arm in the front of the neck, surgeons safely worked between critical structures including the carotid artery, trachea (windpipe), and esophagus (food pipe) to reach the spine. This area contains vital blood vessels, breathing passages, and swallowing structures, making the procedure one that requires advanced surgical skill, precision, and detailed anatomical knowledge.
The damaged disc was removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. A bone graft taken from the patientโs pelvis was placed in the empty disc space and secured with a plate and screws to stabilize the spine.
The surgery was completed successfully, and by the very next day the patient had already begun moving his previously weakened limbs.
This case highlights how modern neurosurgery can safely manage even high-risk spinal conditions, restore movement, relieve suffering, and give patients a second chance at normal life when treatment is provided on time.

Case Highlight: Managing Giant Uterine Myomas & Preserving Fertility
A 42-year-old patient presented to our Bulbula MCH & Surgical branch with a long-standing history of Persistent dull-aching abdominal pain and severe back pain. And also secondary Infertility, with a history of one spontaneous abortion 11 years back, with a strong desire for future pregnancy. She was previously diagnosed with uterine fibroids (Myoma) 15 years age; however, due to lack of consistent follow-up, the condition progressed significantly over time.
Upon physical examination, the patient appeared well but presented with an abdominopelvic mass equivalent to a 34-week pregnancy. Imaging via ultrasound confirmed a Myomatous Uterus, with the largest mass extending to the right sub-diaphragmatic level (just below the ribs).
Fertility-Sparing Myomectomy was done; the primary challenge was the sheer size of the masses and the patient's desire to preserve her fertility. Our surgical team performed a successful Myomectomy, removing five myomas in total.
The Largest Mass: Measured 15 cm x 15 cm.
Outcome: All five tumors were successfully excised.
Preservation: Most importantly, the uterus was reconstructed, and fertility was preserved.
Fibroids (myomas) may begin small, but they can grow and cause complications if not monitored. Skipping follow-up may impact fertility over time. Notably age and fibroid size donโt automatically rule out future pregnancy. With advanced, fertility-preserving myomectomy techniques, itโs often possible to restore the uterus and support the chance of conception.
