stranger things does not have good representation and is very tone deaf in the things it tries to portray


— in the case of lucas sinclair—the only black character apart of the main cast since the beginning—after max got introduced his entire personality revolved around being her boyfriend and nothing else. Compared to the rest of his friends, he is the only one who didn’t have a major plotline that centered around HIM and HIS feelings that didn’t include max. During season four the idea of him changing himself in order to stop being bullied is introduced, however that idea is quickly abandoned and never touched upon again after s4.


— robin && vickie’s relationship has already been badly handled from the start, but I truly think season five ruined it once and for all. They are the ONLY canon queer couple throughout the show, yet their ship is the only ship who is sidelined. To my memory Vickie was introduced around season four, which gave the writers lots of time to develop her and Robin. But no, outside of a brief mention a couple of times they were never looked into on a deeper level like how joyce & hopper or even lucas & max were. During the season five finale, they are also the only ship who never even appeared in the epilogue aside from a brief implication, and even then that implication wasn’t positive. Joyce and hopper got married, lucas and max were practically tonguing eachother, but Robin and Vickie couldn’t even get a tiny little scene? To my knowledge, the only thing Robin says is an implication that Vickie is an overbearing partner and that they may break up. Why is it that the only queer couple is the only couple who is having tons of relationship issues while everyone else is fine?


— everything shown with vecna && holly wheeler, as well as the other children, was an obvious allegory for grooming. This is painfully obvious during S5 E4 where vecna goes on about how he chooses children as his target because they have weak minds, and yet the writers chose to try and make him seem more human during the finale. They tried to go with the whole route that he was forced to do everything, and I think that circle’s back to being insanely tone deaf and offensive when holly wheeler’s plotline is considered. Essentially, will byers also decides to forgive vecna, who was his abductor and even compared vecna to…. himself, for some reason??


as for the way will’s homosexuality and byler as a whole was handled, I won’t even bother to get into that because I just may lose my mind trying to point out every way where his representation was handled badly 🙏 that is a post for another day
