The Stories We Tell w/ Ryan Hodes

Anthropic, for all its posturing about safety, is actually most concerned about American hegemony and empire building. They don’t see their partnerships with the US military as problematic, because their ideology is one of techno-nationalism. They don’t care about mass surveillance, or they wouldn’t be partnered with Palantir. They don’t care one lick about democracy prevailing over authoritarianism, they care about themselves prevailing over their competitors. It’s good old-fashioned dog-eat-dog capitalism dressed up in what Brian Merchant called “ethical AI theater.”

For Anthropic, the whole idea of an LLM being conscious is not only a convenient marketing ploy, it is also a downright dangerous lie. If an LLM is able to have some sense of conscious and intentional decision making, that effectively allows the company developing the chatbot to offload accountability onto the machine, which has no mechanism for actually being accountable.

Companion playlist for the latest vid! No real theme on this one, just some stuff I've been bumping, esp. Includes some of my 2026 fave releases like albums from Genesis Owusu, Olivia Rodrigo, Thee Marloes, Alewya, and Vince Staples.

Btw - I finally quit Spotify and couldn't be happier to be off of that garbage platform. You can find the playlist here, available for FREE and paid subscribers on Patreon: www.patreon.com/TheStoriesWeTell303/posts/perv-gla…

In my next video, I will unpack Anthropic, the techno-nationalist wolf in ethical AI sheep's clothing. In this written preview, I place the AI leader's barrage of recent PR wins within the context of their deceptive "AI Safety" origins. windblowncuriosities.substack.com/p/the-ethical-ai…

fucking hell Villeneuve really understood the assignment. I got some minor gripes with the adaptation thus far but you can't deny that visually he's a master of the craft. This *looks* incredible, nailed the aesthetic and how Dune Messiah should feel.

Saw way too many on the left defend this guy over the past several months, repeating the line from his campaign that all these scandals were manufactured by establishment opps trying to bring him down. I hope the people who thought a fucking Blackwater mercenary with a laundry list of scandals, lies, and sketchy behavior is in any way acceptable representation for the left will reconsider their standards.

Here is the link. It is pretty disturbing stuff so be warned www.politico.com/news/2026/07/06/graham-platner-se…

Stoked to be finally sharing episode 1 of Blood in the Machine, the new podcast I'm producing with tech journalist, Brian Merchant. This thing has been well over a month in the making, and we will be releasing new episodes every week. My role will be mostly behind the scenes, but you'll see me make a cameo towards the end of this one.

There are already approximately one billion podcasts that host tech executives, AI advocates, and startup founders, and that highlight tech stories from a business and culture perspective. This show is for everyone else—the people in their crosshairs.

Check out episode 1 featuring Molly White, a researcher and journalist documenting the staggering sums of political spending by the crypto and AI lobbies, and read more about the project here: www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/the-ai-industry-is-pou…

“This IPO is a liability shift,” the advocacy group says. “Elon is responsible for all of this. It's all the decisions that he's made. All of those litigation expenses, regulatory fines, investigations, all of that is basically being shifted to the shareholders.”
