Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can be classified into 2: Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and Digital Surface Model (DSM).
DTM represents the elevation of the bare earth without taking into account any overground features (e.g. trees, buildings)
DSM includes the elevation of the bare earth terrain plus the natural (e.g. trees, shrubs) and man-made features (e.g. buildings).

Contouring, in surveying, is the determination of elevation of various points on the ground. When used traditional methods like total station, taking elevation data is a very tedious task and even if one gathers the data, it is very limited.
