Low End University

Low End University was founded by Mark Michell, an internationally-touring and recording bassist known for his work with Scale the Summit, Tony MacAlpine, Tetrafusion, and Watermox. His most-recent albums were released to Billboard-charting acclaim in the Top 200, Top Rock Albums, Top Independent Albums, Heatseekers Albums, Top Current Albums and Contemporary Jazz Albums categories.

For over a decade, Michell has been teaching clinics to students around the globe while on tour, has enrolled thousands of students through Low End University's online bass academy, and has published six method books for bass guitar. 2016 saw the release of his instructional DVD "Advanced Rock Bass" after signing a worldwide publishing deal with Hal Leonard Music Corporation, and later that year was hand-selected to the panel of professors at the Warwick Bass Camp in Germany to teach alongside the best bass players in the world.

I finally heard a full NUFAN album! "¡Leche con Carne!" just flows. Great hooks, songs that actually resolve, and incredible melodies. Still not sure what milk and meat have to do with anything.

🚨 WE NOW HAVE MERCH!!! 👉 shoplowend.com/

After years of saying I should probably do this, I finally did it.

To kick things off, I’m running a 72-hour launch sale as a THANK YOU to everyone who’s been part of building this community.

Tees, hoodies, hats, mugs, phone cases, stickers - basically if you can put a logo on it, we probably did. Special "Punk Rock Takeover" design as well with a fun visual representation of what you guys did to my channel 😅

Be honest: what band is criminally overdue on this channel? I asked this over a year ago, and knocked out quite a few based on everyone's suggestions - but I'm circling back for more. Please comment and let me know! 🤘

I finally sat down with At the Drive-In's "Relationship of Command" start to finish, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard an album cycle through so many different flavors of dissonance.

The ugly kind, the anxious kind, the incredibly beautiful kind… all of it. And the more I listened, the more I realized you don’t get to pick and choose. You either accept all of it, or none of it.

I FINALLY sat down with NOFX’s "So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes" start to finish, and it gave me a MUCH clearer picture of the band than anything I’ve heard before.

Honestly? The songs that never get requested ended up teaching me the most. Saracasm and sincerity blur together constantly, and figuring out where each song actually lives emotionally became part of the fun.

And if there’s one thing I’ve known since the first time I heard NOFX, it’s that Fat Mike’s bass playing remains one of the band’s defining voices.

I FINALLY dove into Catch 22's "Keasbey Nights" front to back! This album was way more unpredictable than I expected. The sequencing kept me guessing the whole time, yet it never stopped feeling accessible and fun to sit with.

There’s a youthful looseness here that gives the music its identity. It feels adventurous without trying to prove anything, and you can hear a band discovering their voice in real time. Endearing AF.

I finally reviewed a full HOT WATER MUSIC album! "A Flight and a Crash" finally gave me the full picture of Hot Water Music that I’d been missing. Up until now, I’d only heard isolated moments from different corners of their catalog, usually at the extremes.

From a bass standpoint, this record is *stacked*. Jason Black brings such a distinct personality to every song, even the most straightforward ones. His lines often take unexpected paths that subtly reshape each track’s character, and his unassuming tonal choices drive that uniqueness home. This album would absolutely rank high on a “top bass albums” list for me, simply because of how much dimension he adds without ever feeling excessive.

"Cavalcade" by The Flatliners lived up to its reputation, but in a very different way than I thought it would. I’d clearly heard a few outlier tracks beforehand that threw me off the scent, because once this album unfolded front to back, I had to undo my previous first impression of the band. It’s far more melodic than I anticipated, yet when The Flatliners step on the gas, they get genuinely weird, fusing styles in a way that makes the band almost impossible to label.
