Eighty-four years ago today, on December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor.
In 90 minutes, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's fleet struck the American base: 2,400 sailors were killed, half of them from the crew of the battleship USS Arizona. Three-quarters of the Pacific Fleet was hit, but only two battleships were irreparably destroyed. Of the 20 damaged ships, most would be put back into service.
Despite the shock, the American fleet recovered quickly, and the United States immediately entered World War II.
